The road to
‘Merdeka’
According to history, Malaysia has been colonised by
other nation since 1511, starting by the fall of Malacca to
the hands of Portuguese, followed by The Dutch, British,
Japanese, and back again to British.
The wisdom of Tunku Abdul Rahman, alongside with

other several leaders from every races in Malayan at that
time such as Tun Dato Sri Tan Cheng Lock and Tun V.T
Sambathan, had finally succeeded to convince the British
to allow the Malayans to govern their own country.
Malaysia finally came to its independence in 31st

August 1957 after almost 446 years of colonization.

Today, it has been 64 years since Malaysia’s got its
independence. Malaysia is now standing strong globally.
Being a rapidly developing country, Malaysia is famous
for its big cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya,
while also preferred for its natural wonders such as
Pulau Perhentian and Gunung Kinabalu.
Successful Malaysians are also known globally;

from scientists, athletes, doctors, singers, to even
students. Believe it or not, strong relationships among
Malaysians made this possible. Together with trusts,
confidence and understandings, Malaysia will always
remain a great and harmonious country.

The Celebration of Malaysia’s Independence
Day
‘Merdeka Day’ or Malaysia’s

Independence Day is a public holiday that falls
on the 31st of August every year in Malaysia.
Every year, there will be a big celebration with
colourful parades and shows.
The annual parade used to be held at

Merdeka Square. However, starting in 2018, the
location of celebration will continue to be at
Putra Square in Putrajaya, the federal
administrative centre of Malaysia.
What is the most memorable things you had
during the National Independence Day?
“I remember on 2012’s Independence Day, my parents brought me to Dataran Merdeka
to watch parades. I was very happy that day!”

National Independence Day
It is very important for us to appreciate the independence that we have today.
By appreciating the freedom, we are able make our country great and living in a peaceful and harmony days.

BEING MALAYSIAN MEANS WE ARE UNIQUE!
Although Malaysians are multicultural people,

we can still be very considerate and are able to live
peacefully among us.
What unite us might be Nasi Lemak and Teh

Tarik, Dato’ Lee Chong Wei or Skuad Bolasepak
Harimau Malaya, but always know, we are actually
together in much of every and any way.
Malaysia has become the responsibility that our

forefathers gave us. So let’s keep it strong!
What can you do to be a good Malaysian?
