WOOD CARVING
• Wood carving is an ancient art form of Sikkim. ...
Three types of wood are normally used such as 'tooni'
(toona celiata),'rani chaap' (Macalia Exelsa), and
'okher' (Walnut). First of all a piece of wood is cut
into a desired shape.
THANGKA PAINTINGS
• Thangka is also known as scroll painting. Initially,
designs are drawn on a gelatin paper using pen. The
cloth is tied to an iron or wooden frame using cotton
threads. To avoid pores on the cloth, a mixture of
distemper and gum boiled with water is applied on
the cloth before painting and dried.
HANDICRAFTS

• Sikkim is a state having very old and deep


rooted handloom and handicraft traditions.
Handloom weaving, thanka painting, wooden
mask making, wood curving are typical
of Sikkim. All these traditional handloom
and handicrafts are described.

• Rumtek Monastery.
• Buddha Park. Ravangla.

RUMTEK MONASTERY.

• Rumtek Monastery also called the Dharma


Chakra Centre, is a gompa( remote place)
located in the Indian state of Sikkim near the
capital Gangtok. It is the seat-in-exile of the
Gyalwang Karmapa, inaugurated in 1966 by
the 16th Karmapa. It is also a focal point for
the sectarian tensions within the Karma Kagyu
school of Tibetan Buddhism that characterize
the 17th Karmapa controversy.

BUDDHA PARK, RAVANGLA
• The Buddha Park of Ravangla, also known
as Tathagata Tsal, is situated
near Ravangla in South Sikkim district of the
Indian state of Sikkim. It was constructed
between 2006 and 2013, and features a 130-
foot-high (40 m) statue of the Buddha, erected
to mark the 2550th anniversary of the birth of
Gautama Buddha, as its main attraction.

HANUMAN TOK, GANGTOK
• Hanuman Tok is a Hindu
temple complex which is located in the
upper reaches of Gangtok, the capital of
the Indian state of Sikkim. The temple is
dedicated to lord Hanuman, and
maintained by the Indian army. It was
established in 1952.

NATHULA PASS, GANGTOK
• Nathu La is a mountain pass in
the Himalayas in East Sikkim district. It
connects the Indian state of Sikkim with
China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The pass ,
at 4,310 m ( 14,140 ft) above mean sea level ,
forms a part of an offshoot of the ancient Tea
Horse Road.
