June 17,1883
Jose Rizal visited Paris,France and
described the following:
• Champs Elysees
• Verdome Column
• Place de la Concorde
• Church of Madeline
Rizal while in madrid wanted to go back to
the Philippines in 1884, on November 26,
1884, He wrote a letter to his family
stating “I expressed to you the desire to
return there as soon as possible.” Paciano
replied, “I think that you should continue
your studies there and end them when our
resources are exhausted.”
In a letter coming from Paciano, Rizal was
advised,
“You are very correct in saying that you
are not being sent your allowance, not
due to lack of will but indeed economic
crisis or lack of work.”
He also visited:
• Luxemburg Garden
• Museum of Orfila
• Louvre Museum
Return to Paris
(October 1885)
• After his graduation, Rizal proceeded to
Paris, France. In Paris, he learned more
about Opthalmology. He registered in the
clinic of Dr. Louis de Wecker, named
Crugen clinic on December 4, 1885.

- treats 50 – 100
patients daily
Rizal devoted his time to learn and master:

• French
• German
• Italian
• English
• Polish
• Greek languages.
Rizal’s compatriots were :
• Juan Luna
• Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo
• Tavera Brothers
Rizal only survived through the help
of his Filipino compatriots such as
Juan Luna who gave him money for
his daily needs.
Rizal’s Literature in France
During his stay in France, he also wrote several
literary works written in French language. They
were the following:

• Marie Colombier-the Pistol of the Little Baroness


(Book Review)

• The Kite and the Hen (Prose)


• Alphonse Daudet: Tartarin Sur Les
(Book Review)

• The Fisherwoman and the Fish (Prose)


YEAR 1885
At the same year the following occasions happened :
November 19, 1885 : While in Paris, Rizal received
information from Ceferino de Leon about the
prevailing vices among the Filipinos in the house of
Aceveno in Madrid, abetted by the lousy women
gamblers.
November 27, 1885 : Rizal’s transfer to Paris was
disapproved by Paciano who, at the same time,
informed Rizal that his letter caused their mother to
shred tears, that’s Rizal’s brown house would be sold,
the money to be remitted to him in Paris together
with the chronometer watch worth $300 (Mexican
Dollars)
• December 19, 1885 - The news that the
Filipinos in Madrid were preparing a Christmas
banquet in spite of the little money they had, was
relayed in a letter to Rizal in Paris by Ceferino de
Leon who also informed the former about his (de
Leon’s) plan of going to Paris the following
summer.
YEAR 1886
January 1, 1886 : Rizal represented to Paz Pardo
de Tevera a pair of Greek vases which he painted
the other with the picture of the Filipinos
engaged in cockfighting, and the other with the
same people at work as milkmen and as
prisoners at hard labor.
January 1886 : In the album of Paz Pardo de
Tavera, he entered the illustrated story of the
monkey and the turtle.
February 1, 1886 - Rizal left Paris
Rizal in Germany
• February 1, 1886- Rizal left Paris, France
and proceeded to Heidelberg Germany.
• February 3, 1886- Rizal arrived in
Heidelberg, a historical city in Germany
famous for its old university and romantic
surroundings
• Chess player’s club- a club wherein the
students made Rizal as a chess player
He worked at the

direction of Dr.
Otto Becker,
distinguished
German
ophthalmologist
Rizal wrote letters to his sisters Maria and Trinidad. In his letters he
described:

• Germany- country of order and obedience


• German students- respectful, affectionate,
modest, and not boastful.
• German women- tall stout and blonde(physical)
- serious, studious, industrious, not afraid of man,
concerned about education, diligent.
• April 12, 1886- Rizal wrote a poem
entitled, "A Los Flores Del
Heidelberg"( to the flowers of
heidelberg)
• inspired by the Neckar river teeming
with flowers
Summer vacation in Wilhelmsfeld
• Wilhelmsfeld- mountainous village in Heidelberg.
• Dr. Karl Ulmer- a pastor of vicarage in
Wilhelmsfeld. His wife greatly admire Rizal.
• June 2, 1886- Rizal retured to Heidelberg
remembering the hospitality and friendship
accorded to him by the Ulmers.
 The house where Rizal stayed for two
weeks in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany in 1886.
 He finished writing the Noli me tangere
here.
 He stayed with the Protestant pastor Karl
Ullmer and his family.

from his stay in the
German village— the
religious tolerance the
people practice in the
area.
• August 9, 1886- Rizal left
Heidelberg
• August 14, 1886- boarded by a
train. Rizal arrived in Leipzig
• Prof. Friedrich Ratzel- well known German
Historian.
• Dr. Hans Meyer- famous German
Anthropologist.
• Rizal translated Schiller’s William Tell into
Tagalog for the Filipinos to be aware of the
story of the champion of Swiss
independence.
• He also translated the fairy tales written by
Hans Christian Andersen for the benefit of
his young nieces and nephews in the
Philippines.
• He worked as a proofreader in a
publishing company to augment
his allowance. He was accepted
because of his knowledge of
German, Spanish, and other
European languages.
• He stayed for two months because of the
lower cost of living in Leipzig.
• Oct. 29, 1886- He left Leipzig and went to
Dresden, where he met Dr. Adolph Meyer.
• After 3 days he left Dresden and went to
Berlin by train.

• Nov. 1, 1886- Rizal arrived in
Berlin.
• Fortunate enough he met Dr.
Feodor Jagor in person( author of
the book Travels of the
Philippines)
• Dr. Rudolf Virchow- famous German
anthropologist who was then the
president of the Anthropological
Society of Berlin
• Dr. Joest- a famous German
geographer
• Dr. Karl Ernest Schweigger- a noted
German ophthalmologist.
