THREE PHASE HALF BRIDGE

INVERTER (180ᵒ conduction type)
Three phase inverter

• High power applications

• AC motor drives
• Induction heating
• UPS
Three phase inverter
•Constructed
  with three single phase bridges
• − are gate commutated controlled devices (having bidirectional current flow capability)
• − are reverse recovery diodes

• Top group switches (, , )

• Bottom group (, , )

E
Modes of operation
• Switching action takes place after 60ᵒ
• Each switch conducts for 180ᵒ in one time period
• Switches of same phase leg are not turned ON simultaneously

The line voltages can be calculated by following expressions:
•  Line to line RMS voltage is given by

• Line to neutral RMS voltage is given by

Comparison between 180ᵒ and 120ᵒ conduction
mode operation
• Since one switch conducts for 120ᵒ, these switches are less utilized as compared
to 180ᵒ conduction for the same load conditions.

• 180ᵒ conduction is preferred and it is generally used in three-phase inverters.

• The design of an inverter requires the determination of average, rms, and peak
currents of the switching devices (IGBT, MOSFET, etc..) and diodes.
