Full stop is used :

1.) At the end of the sentence---Let’s go there.

2.) After Abbreviations--- etc. , a.m., p.m.

3.) After titles like---Mr. , Mrs. , Dr.

Question mark is used:
1.) To end a direct question--- Where do you live?

2.) To indicate uncertainty---He lived till 1996?

3.) In a series of questions---What? You are not coming? Why?

4.) to end a tag question?----He is not coming, is he?


Comma is used:
1.) To separate words and word groups in a simple series of three or
more items---My estate goes to my husband, son, daughter-in-law, and
nephew.

2.) To separate two adjectives when the order of the adjectives----He is


a strong, healthy man.

3.) To separate the quoted part of the sentence---He said, “I love this
car.”

Exclamation mark is used to show:
•Excitement - “I can’t wait to go to Disneyland!”

•Surprise - “Oh! You already bought a new car!”

•Astonishment - “Wow! El Capitan is even bigger than I thought!”

•Emphasizing a point - “No! We don’t want to go to the party!”

•Another strong emotion - “That news story made me so angry!”

Objective:

WWBAT to revise Quotation marks,


colon, semi colon and apostrophe and
properly punctate the sentences
We use Quotation Marks: (“”)

1.) At the sides of exact words spoken


or written by someone else.
2.) Full stops and commas always go
inside the quotation marks.

E.g..- “I am not going to the Party


today,” Allen said.
Colon is used: (:)

1.) After a complete sentence to introduce a list of items


Example:
On my trip I will bring: clothes, a pillow, a sleeping bag, a
toothbrush

2.) To give information about a particular word or sentence.

Example:
Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is a process by which green
plants convert light energy to chemical energy
We use Semi colon to: (;)

Separate independent sentences. These are


sentences that are closed conned in thought
Example: After class, I went to the Pizza
Hut; then I graded papers for an hour.
We use Apostrophe to : (’)

1.)Indicate, the omission of a letter or


letters
Example: She’s (she is) a good girl.

2.) Indicate a possessive case


Example: This is Hazel’s book
