What are the elements
of Carbohydrates?

Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen.

What are the monomers of Carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides are made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (CHO).
What are the
polymers of
Carbohydrates?

A polysaccharide is
the polymer of
carbohydrates.
What is the function
of Carbohydrates?

The primary function of
carbohydrates is to provide
energy for the body,
especially the brain and the
nervous system.
What are some
examples of
Carbohydrates?
Fructose, galactose, ribose, lactose,
maltose, and sucrose are
all examples of
carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are
found in a wide array of both
healthy and unhealthy foods—
bread, beans, milk, popcorn,
potatoes, cookies, spaghetti, soft
drinks, corn, and cherry pie.
What are the elements of Lipids?

• Lipids are made of the same

three elements as
carbohydrates, carbon,
hydrogen and oxygen but
there is much less oxygen
present than in the
carbohydrates.
What are the
monomers of Lipids?
glycerol/fatty acids are the monomers of lipids
What are the
polymers of
Lipids?
Lipids - polymers called diglycerides,
triglycerides.
What is the function of Lipids?
Lipids provide energy, protection and insulation for the organs in the body. Lipids are also an
important part of cell membranes.
What are some examples of Lipids?

• Phospholipids.
• Triglycerides (Fat)
• Sterols.
What are the Elements of
Protein?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, & nitrogen.

What are the monomers of
Protein?
Proteins are composed of monomers called amino acids.

What are the
Polymers of
Protein?
Proteins - polymers are
known as polypeptide

What are the Functions of
Protein, -there are about 4.

• Enzyme Activity. Responsible for reactions

enzymes catalyze of nearby substrates.
• Cell to Cell Recognition. Recognize molecules
on the surface of other cells.
• Cell Signaling.
• Transport Materials.

What are some
examples of Protein?
• Anti-bodies help fight disease.
• Enzymes in saliva, stomach, and
small intestine help digest food.
• Alph-keratin forms hair and
fingernails.
What are the Elements
of Nucleic Acid?

• Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen,

Phosphorus.

What are the Monomers
of Nucleic Acid?

• The monomers of DNA are called

nucleotides.

What is the Function of
Nucleic Acid? To store and
transmit hereditary
information.

What is the function of DNA?

producing the proteins and
enzymes that every cell
needs/DNA acts to pass on traits.

What is the function of RNA?

RNA is a nucleic acid that
consists of a long chain of
nucleotides. The main function is
to direct the production of
proteins. This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY.
