Distribution of population
• Population is distributed unevenly
• UP has the highest population followed by MS
Bihar, WB, AP
• MS, UP,BI,WB, AP TN MP RAJ KK
GUJaccount for 76% of population
• Arunachal Pradesh 0.11% Uttaranchal 0.83%
Factors responsible for uneven
distribution of population
1. Physical Factors: climate, water, terrain, transport
2. Socio Economic Factors: Settled Agriculture.
Agri. develop. pattern of human settlements,
dev. Of transport, industries, urbanization
3. Historical Factors: development of cities such as
Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai by British
Density of Population
• Number of persons per unit area
• The density of population (2001) is 313/ sq km.

• Lowest in Arunachal Pradesh: 13/ per sq km

NCT: 9340
• WB; 903 Bihar: 880
• Himalayan states and North East have low density
whereas Ganga plain has highest density and other
states have moderate population
• Physiological density = total population
net cultivated area
• Agricultural density = tota agricultura population
net cultivated area
Sex Ratio
• The sex ratio of population is determined by the
number of females for every 1000 males. This helps in
understanding the equality of males and females in the
society, which consequently gives an idea of the
nation’s culture.
• India’s sex ratio has always been on the lower side,
until recently.
• States like Kerala and Union Territory of Pondicherry
have higher sex ratio than the major states.
Literacy Rate
This is yet another important characteristics of the
population because the literacy rate of a country
determines its economic structure and growth.
Literacy, according to the 2001 Census, is the ability
of a person of 7 years and above to read and write in
any language.
The census states the literacy rate of the population of
India is almost 74.04% (2016).
