Prof Ernest Markose Mathew Amar Mohammed
Christo M George
Jeff Mathew Joseph
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to propose an effective oil skimmer
that ensures:

▪ To design an oil separator robot, with no chemical methods of extraction

of oil from the ocean surface.

▪ To create an extracting mechanism and to fabricate.

1
METHODOLOGY
▪ Detailed study on oil extraction method from marine spills.
▪ Build skills on modeling software (Solidworks2020).
▪ Sketching the modular design of skimmer on Solidworks & modify if
needed.
▪ Acquire basic skills on Ansys.
▪ Conduct CFD & Structural analysis of the proposed designs.
▪ Study the results and modify the design (if needed).
▪ Fabrication of the working model and testing

DIMENSIONS AND MATERIALS

• Diameter of drum = 200mm

• Length of the drum = 300mm
• Speed of rolling (drum) = 10 rpm
▪ Adsorption material =Polyurethane

COMPONENTS SPECFICATIONS REMARKS

Adsorption Material Adsorption ratio : 15 – 20 Adsorption ratio ∝ Oil
extraction rate
PVC pipe 10mm(dia)x 300 mm
BLDC Motor (with gear 10 RPM (with gear reduction) For drum operation
reduction)
Battery Module 4500mAh, 12V
RF Module Range upto 8km For wireless operations

OIL REMOVAL CALCULATION
As we are considering  polyurethane foam coated in silane for the purpose of oil removing. The
adsorption of oil in a marine environments is depended on  many factors like
Nature of adsorbent, Surface area, Wakes & Currents, Porosity
In this scenario we are only considering only 10% efficiency in oil adsorbing capacity

So oil removed by a roller  is given by,

Oil recovered = 2πrl  * πD(N/60)  *  0. 1
=  (2*π*0.1*0.3)*(π*0.2*(10/60))*0.1
=  (0.1885)*(0.1047)*0.1
=   1.973x10-3 m3/s
=   1.973 ltr/s (from a roller)

for  4 rollers  =  4 * 1.973 ltr/s

=  7.895 ltr/s

RESULT
 The preliminary and final design of the model is completed using
Solidworks.
 MARK 2 design undergone turbulence and vorticity analysis in Ansys
