 Islam: community of believers (umma) and treaty law with others. Islam
developed its own distinctive understanding of international society.
Emergence of Modern International Society

• European international society took a hundreds years to develop.


• The key elements that help international society development are;
 The domination of Europe by larger states.
 Church authority were diminishing by Protestant Reformation thus indirectly enhancing the
strengthened sovereignty equality.
 In 1492, Columbus’s voyage to the New Worlds, followed by Vasco da Gama’s lead to
discovery of sea route to Indian 1498.

Modern International Society
o Codified in Peace of Westphalia (1648)
-Thirty Years War (1618-1648) end, from 1648-1776 the international society that had been taken

-In 1999, Stephen Krasner argued that sovereignty not more than a organised hypocrisy because
states can pursue their own interest without interference.

-Emergence the new nation and nationalism
-After defeat of Napoleon, Concert of Europe club were established by leading states to set themse
from smaller one.It was characterized by regular meetings of the club, with the aims of maintaining the
balance of power and reaching collective decisions on various potentially divisive issues.
o The concert of Europe lasted until First World War, in nineteenth century Europe international society
hegemony by great power’s club named Leagues of Nation that construct more highly organized inte
society.
Globalisation of International Society
 United Nations intended as improved from UN but largely blocked by cold war
for its functioning.
 Soviet-American competition affected all aspects of world politics, the rough
balance of power between the two superpowers did help to secure a degree of
order, especially in Europe, where the mili­tary confrontation was greatest.
 Decolonization led to the worldwide spread the European model of
international society
(mutual recognition, non-intervention, diplomacy, consensual international
law)
 In 1989, the collapse of Union of Soviet Socialist Republic completed the
globalization of international society.
