Biotechnology
Course Description
The course deals with Biotechnological methods for waste
water treatment; Removal of pollutants (by Biosorption,
Bioleaching, Bioremediation, composting, anearobic
treatment); constraints and properties of bioremediation;
Bioremediation of Xenobiotic compounds: recalcitrant,
hazardous wastes; genetic engineering approach for
biodegradation; Solid waste - sewage sludge - disposal and
utilization; Biotechnological methods for treatment of
effluents from various industry; Vermitechnology;
phytoremdiation, phycoremediation; Current status of
Environmental Biotechnology; Biofertilizers, biopesticides,
Biosensors, bioindicator, fine chemicals production, clean
technology (biofules) bioleaching of different ores,
desulphurization of coal; reclamation of the degraded lands.
Course Objective:
At the end of this course, the students will be able to:
• Understand environmental problems posed by human and
natural phenomena
• Know the methods used for removal of pollutants and
wastes from the environment using biological methods
• Know the use of ecofriendly methods to maintain the
environment clean and restore the degraded lands
