SMALL GROUP

COMMUNICATION
ITS NATURE AND SIGNIFICANCE
 Small group communication is one of the
interesting areas of communication.
 Refers to a “group small enough in size to
facilitate every member’s interacting with every
other member and whose members perceive
themselves as a cooperative unit, create a structure
of role relationships, and develop normative
patterns of relating to one another. (Buerkel-
Rothfuss, 1985).”
BENEFITS
 Group communication may be considered an effective method in
making decision and solving problems. The idea is to discuss and
deliberate on certain problem, issue situation, or pertinent topic with
a group. Each member of a group plays an important role. Each
make a substantial contribution on the preposition being deliberated
upon to achieve a consensus or agreement.
 Group discussion is very important and significant especially for
quick decision-making. Most companies, institutions, and
organizations resort to this method because it is very useful in
solving matters and issues promptly.
THE ROLE OF MEMBERS
THE GROUP BUILDING ROLES (POSITIVE
ROLES)
 Keep the group together and enable the group
to work together.
GROUP-BUILDING ROLES
 ENCOURAGER – Praises, accepts contributions
of other explicitly or implicitly.
 PEACEMAKER – Attempts to resolve personal
conflicts or disagreement.
 EFFICIENCY EXPERT – Makes suggestions to
solve problems that hinder free functioning of
group, i.e., procedures, mechanics, rules.
TASK-ORIENTED ROLES (POSITIVE
ROLES)
 Geared to help the group solve the problem
presented to it.
TASK-ORIENTED ROLES
 ASKER OF QUESTIONS – Asks information or for opinions, clarifies a
statement.
 INFORMATION-GIVER – Volunteer facts either from his own experience or
from reading; encyclopedia-like (information at his fingertips).
 OPINION-GIVER – States his belief on a question; attempts to move the group
towards the belief.
 FISCALIZER – Examines an opinion minutely for defects. Disagrees often but
objectively.
 ELABORATOR – Takes another’s statements and explain it further.
 ORIENTER – Summarizes others’ statements. Summarizes state of the
discussion in relation to the goal.
 HARMONIZER – Out of diverse opinions, finds a creative solution embracing
all. Imaginative thinker.
 ENERGIZER – Keeps suggesting new ideas, new activities. Attempts to push
group forward.
INDIVIDUALISTIC ROLES (NEGATIVE
ROLES)
 Aim to satisfy an individual’s needs, often neurotic, rather
than those of group; hence they tend to split the group.
INDIVIDUALISTIC ROLES
 RECOGNITION- SEEKER – Calls attention to self by loud-
talking, gripping, or opposing.
 DISAGREER – Automatically espouses the other side of the
question. Refuses to welcome others’ opinions. Stubborn/obstinate.
 AGGRESSOR – Attacks others’ persons in subtle ways. Uses ad
hominem arguments, acerbic jokes.
 DOMINATOR – Imposes authority, gives orders. Bossy.
Manipulates others to his view, Interrupts contributions of others.
 PASSIVE LISTENER – Does nothing, contributes nothing.
Noncommittal, uninvolved.
