Alternative
Medicine
BY:Paderna Mildred I.
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

•is the term for medical products and

practices that are not part of standard
care. Standard care is what medical
doctors, allied health professionals, such as
nurses and physical therapists, practice.
Alternative medicine is used in place of
standard medical care.
● not part of biomedicine, or are contradicted by
scientific evidence or established science.
● "Biomedicine" is that part of medical science
 that applies principlesof anatomy, physics,
chemistry, biology, physiology, and other
natural sciences to clinical practice, using
scientific methods to establish the effectiveness
of that practice
● Approaches intended to improve or maintain
human health that are not part of standard
medical care, also known as conventional, or
Western, medicine. Such approaches are
sometimes referred to as holistic or traditional
medicine.
Examples of
Alternative
Medicine
Homeopathy
is a medical system based on the
belief that the body can cure
itself. Those who practice it use
tiny amounts of natural
substances, like plants and
minerals. They believe these
stimulate the healing process. It
was developed in the late 1700s
in Germany.
Accupuncture
The term “Acupuncture” describes
as procedures involving the
stimulation of anatomical points
on the body using a variety of
techniques.
The acupuncture technique
involves penetrating the skin
with thin, solid, metallic needles
that are manipulated by the
hands or by electrical
stimulation.
Traditional Medicine
(also known as indigenous or folk
medicine) comprises medical
aspects of traditional knowledge
 that developed over generations
within various societies before the
era of modern medicine.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a pseudoscientific
complementary and alternative
medicine that is concerned with the
diagnosis and treatment of
mechanical disorders of the
musculoskeletal system, especially
the spine.
Water Therapy
It is also called Aquatic Therapy or
Hydro Therapy

Hydrotherapy, formerly called

hydropathy and also called water
cure, is a part of alternative medicine,
occupational therapy, and
physiotherapy, that involves the use
of water for pain relief and treatment.
Suob or Steam Therapy
•Is done by inhaling salt water on a
basin while using a piece of cloth,
such as a towel, to cover one’s head
and shoulders and enclose the steam.
Ventosa
Cupping therapy is an ancient
form of alternative medicine in
which a therapist puts special
cups on your skin for a few
minutes to create suction.
People get it for many
purposes, including to help
with pain, inflammation, blood
flow, relaxation and well-being,
and as a type of deep-tissue
massage.
Tawas
is a divination ritual in pseudomedicine in
Filipino Psychology (but considered
superstition in Western psychology),
carried out by the mangtatawas (literally
"user of tawas"). It attempts to diagnose
an affliction or psychological disorder by
interpreting shapes produced in water by
heated alum or molten wax droppings
from a burning candle. It is thus a form of
both carromancy and oryctomancy.
