ACUPUNCTURE

Lilberth T. Siega
ACUPUNCTURE
•Acupuncture alleviates pain
and can increase immune
response by balancing the
flow of vital life energy
throughout the body.

•It is a complete system of

healing and provides
effective treatment for
numerous conditions.
• Acupuncture originated in China over 5000 years
ago.

• It is based on the belief that health is determined

by a balanced flow of qi (also referred to as chi),
the vital life energy present in all living
organisms.

• According to acupuncture theory, qi circulates in

the body along twelve major energy pathways
called meridians.
Acupuncture meridians
Electrical Properties of
Acupuncture
• Recent research suggests that there is a specific
relationship between acupuncture points, meridians,
and the electrical currents in the body.

• These points acted as amplifiers to boost the minute

electrical signals as they travelled along the body,
and that the insertion of the needle could interfere
with that flow and thus block the stimulus of pain.
Pain
• Acupuncture has proven to be a very
successful treatment for pain relief, as it
appears to stimulate the release of
endorphins and enkephalins, the body’s
natural pain-killing chemicals.

• In 1983, the medical journal Pain

reviewed further evidence of
acupuncture’s importance as an
alternative to conventional analgesic
(pain-relieving) medication.
• Acupuncture needles are of
different lengths and gauges,
but are generally hair-thin,
solid, and made of stainless
steel.

• To protect from AIDS or

hepatitis, most acupuncturists
use presterilized, disposable
needles.
• Some treatments last only a
few seconds, while others
take 45 minutes or longer.
• Sometimes, an ear needle is
used that lies flush against
the skin of the ear and, after
being covered with tape, is
allowed to remain in the ear
for more than a week.
• Generally, needles are left in
from 20-30 minutes.

Non-Needle Stimulation of Acupoints
• In addition to the use of needles, other forms of
treatment are applied to accupoints.

• Heat is used by burning an herb called “moxa”

(mugwort, or Artemisia vulgaris) above the point to
be treated.

• According to studies from China, this herb is unique

in that it stimulates acupoints and hastens the body’s
self-healing.
Auriculotherapy (Ear
Acupuncture)

 It is used in the treatment

and control of pain, dyslexia,
and other functional
imbalances. It is applied
through the use of
acupuncture needles, ear
massage, and in certain cases,
electrical stimulation or
infrared treatment.

Conditions Benefited by Acupuncture
• The World Health Organization has cited 104 different
conditions that acupuncture can treat, these includes:
The Future of Acupuncture
• Not only is acupuncture effective as primary modality, it also can play
a vital role as an adjunctive therapydue to how effective the meridian
system is as a means of proper diagnosis.

• Because the meridians influence every cell in the body and pass
through every organ and organ system, acupuncture provides health
practitioners with an accurate and noninvasive means of determining
health deficiences, as well as a method of reestablishing balance.

• In short, it provides maximum benefits without the dangerous side

effects associated with many of the approaches of conventional
medicine.
