THIRD QUARTER/WEEK 7
LESSON

THE CHURCH IS
APOSTOLIC
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the lesson, the

learners are expected to
1.Identify the biblical basis of the apostolic
character of the Church.
2. Explain the reasons how the Church is
apostolic.
3. Discuss what apostolic succession means.
4. Appreciate the apostolic foundation of
the Church.
I. INTRODUCTION.
A. The Catholic Church believes
that Jesus Christ founded a
visible Church and willed that all
men should belong to the Church.

 “Whoever listens to you

listens to Me. Whoever
rejects you rejects Me. And
whoever rejects Me rejects
the One who sent Me.”
Lk 10:16
B. Jesus commanded the
apostles to proclaim the
Gospel to every creature.

“whoever believes
and is baptized will
be saved; whoever
doe not believe will
be condemned”
Mk 16:16
C. The ministry of the apostles
is the continuation of Jesus’
mission.

D. The Catholic Church never

stopped to carry out this
mission originally given to the
apostles. The biblical
passages only show that the
Church is apostolic.
II. PRESENTATION.
The Catholic Church is apostolic because she is
founded on the apostle in three (3) ways.

origin.
 Christ built His Church on the foundation of the
apostles (Eph 2:20).
 Jesus established His Church under
the leadership of Peter.

 He even assured Peter and the

apostles that He would be with
them until the end of time.

 This implies that they will continue

to rule the Church.
 The present leadership in the Catholic
Church can be traced back to the first
Christian leaders who were the apostles.

 The bishops are the legitimate

successors of the apostles.

 The Catholic Church is the only

Christian Church in the world
that proclaims to be ruled by the
successor of St. Peter.

teaching.
 The apostles teach only what Christ had
commanded them. (Mt 28:20)
 At present,
 The Church teaches the same teachings as the apostle taught.
(SAME DOCTRINE)
 The Church teaches exactly how they had taught.
(PREACHING)
 The Church guards and transmits the teaching of the
apostles. (UNDER THE INSPIRATION OF THE HOLY
SPIRIT)

government.
 It is the most important element in the mark of
apostolicity.
 We can trace the present leadership of the Catholic
Church to the first Christian leaders, the apostles.
 The pastors of the Church, the Pope and the bishops,
are connected with the apostles by the succession of
office.
 The lawful succession happened continuously in history
from the first Pope, Peter, and the apostles down to
Pope Francis and the bishops.

III.CONCLUSION.
III. CONCLUSION.
The entire Catholic Church is
apostolic
 As she is sent to the entire world
 All her members take part in different ways in the
apostolic mission.
 All of us as modern-day apostles are called to give
witness to Christ
 By embodying
 And proclaiming His Gospel.
