Weaknesses of
Quantitative Research
At the end of the lesson
you should be able to:
1.describe strengths and weaknesses
of quantitative research
2.justify how to address the
weaknesses of quantitative research
1.Precision of numbers ACTIVITY 1
2.Inadequacy of numbers for total picture and depth
of analysis
3.Sample is less prone to sampling bias
4.Less than 100% accuracy in sampling, instrument
construction and administration
5.Error can be computed, e.g. sampling error
6.Assumptions in statistical methods
7.Level of significance (statistical) can be determined
that results are not due to chance alone
Let’s talk about it!
a.When do we say it is a
strength? Weakness?
b.How can we address
the weaknesses in
quantitative research?
STRENGTHS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
1.Allows for a broader study,
involving a greater number of
subjects, and enhancing the
generalization of the results;
STRENGTHS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
2. Allows for greater objectivity and accuracy of
results. Generally, quantitative methods are
designed to provide summaries of data that
support generalizations about the phenomenon
under study. In order to accomplish this,
quantitative research usually involves few
variables and many cases, and employs
prescribed procedures to ensure validity and
reliability;
STRENGTHS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
3. Applying well-established
standards means that the research
can be replicated, and then
analyzed and compared with
similar studies;
STRENGTHS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
4. You can summarize vast
sources of information and
make comparisons across
categories and over time;
STRENGTHS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
5. Personal bias can be
avoided by keeping a 'distance'
from participating subjects and
using accepted computational
techniques.
Weaknesses of Quantitative
Research
1.Quantitative data is more
efficient and able to test
hypotheses, but may miss
contextual detail.
Weaknesses of Quantitative
Research
2. Uses a static and rigid
approach and so employs
an inflexible process of
discovery
Weaknesses of Quantitative Research
3. The development of standard
questions by researchers can lead to
"structural bias" and false
representation, where the data actually
reflects the view of the researcher
instead of the participating subject.
Weaknesses of Quantitative
Research
4. Results provide less
detail on behavior,
attitudes, and motivation.
Weaknesses of Quantitative
Research
5. Researcher may collect a
much narrower and
sometimes superficial
dataset.
Weaknesses of Quantitative
Research
6. Results are limited as they
provide numerical descriptions
rather than detailed narrative and
generally provide less elaborate
accounts of human perception.
Weaknesses of Quantitative Research
7. The research is often carried out in
an unnatural, artificial environment so
that a level of control can be applied
to the exercise. This level of control
might not normally be in place in the
real world thus yielding "laboratory
results" as opposed to "real world
results“.
Weaknesses of Quantitative
Research
8. Preset answers will not
necessarily reflect how people
really feel about a subject and, in
some cases, might just be the
closest match to the preconceived
hypothesis.
Weaknesses How to
address them?
Self-reported information obtained from questionnaires
may be inaccurate or incomplete.
The administration of a structured questionnaire creates
an unnatural situation that may alienate respondents.
Studies are expensive and time-consuming, and even the
preliminary results are usually not available for a long
period of time.
Reduction of data to numbers results in lost information.
Untested variables may account for program impacts.
