Voluntary Blood Donation

An act promoting voluntary blood


donation and providing for an
adequate supply of safe blood.

VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONOR,
NON-RENUMERATED BLOOD DONOR

“ A person who gives blood, plasma or other blood


components of their own free will and receives no
payment for it, either in the form of cash, or in kind
which could be considered a substitute for money”.
BLOOD:
•Has no substitute

•Cannot be manufactured synthetically in


any laboratory

•Can only come from human beings


FACTOIDS:
Normal human adult: has approximately
5 to 6 liters of blood in the body.

healthy individuals: may donate 450 ml of


blood without any ill affects; a small loss that will be
rapidly compensated by the body.

fluid portion: replaced within 24 hours


Cells: within weeks,
by the end of the month: same amount of blood as
before the blood donation.

What happens to my donated blood?
Each unit of blood collected will be examined
for 5 transfusion transmissible infectious
diseases namely HIV, Malaria, Syphilis,
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C before it is
transfused to patients.
Who are qualified to donate?

1. AGE
Must be 18 to 65 years old,
(16 and 17 may donate provided
with parent’s/guardian’s consent).
2. WEIGHT

Must be at least
110 lbs. or 50 kgs.
Who are qualified to donate?
3. BLOOD PRESSURE & PULSE RATE
Your blood pressure must be between:
Systolic: 90 – 160 mmHg
Diastolic: 60 – 100 mmHg
Pulse Rate: 50 to 100 beats/min.

4. HEMOGLOBIN
Your hemoglobin level
must be at least 125g/l
(not anemic)
PLEASE DO NOT DONATE IF ANY OF
THESE APPLY TO YOU:
• HIV/AIDS: if you are a person with symptoms or
laboratory evidence of HIV infection.
• PLEASE DO NOT DONATE TO GET HIV/HEPATITIS TEST
• you CAN give HIV/HEPATITIS to someone else through
blood transfusions even if you feel well and have a
negative HIV/HEPATITIS test. tests cannot detect infections
for a period of time after a person is exposed to HIV.
• If you think you may be at risk for HIV/AIDS/Hepatitis or
you want an HIV/AIDS test, please ask for information
about other testing facilities.

• RISK BEHAVIOR FOR HIV/AIDS:
– Are a male who has had sexual contact with
another male, even once
– Have ever taken or given money, drugs or other
payment for sex
– Have had sexual contact in the past 12 months
with anyone described above
– Have had syphilis, gonorrhea or other STI in the
past 12 months
– In the last 12 months have been
incarcerated/imprisoned
PLEASE DO NOT DONATE IF
ANY OF THESE APPLY TO YOU:
• CLINICAL CONDITIONS:
• Unexplained weight loss or night sweats
• Blue or purple spots in your mouth or skin
• Swollen lymph nodes for more than one month
• White spots or unusual sores in your mouth
• Cough that won’t go away or shortness of breath
• Diarrhea that won’t go away
• Fever of more than 38oC for more than 10 days
PLEASE DO NOT DONATE IF ANY
OF THESE APPLY TO YOU:

• CANCER: Lung cancer, Breast cancer, Leukemia, Lymphoma


and the likes
• HEPATITIS: A history of the disease, jaundice (yellowish skin
and the eyes), or a positive lab test for the virus.
• ORGAN FAILURE: Kidney, lung or liver failure.
• RECREATIONAL DRUG USE (by injection): Having used drugs
not prescribed by a physician.
• TRAVEL: Travel to certain countries may restrict you from
donating blood. Ask the blood bank personnel for the travel
list.

How to avail blood from PNRC?

The hospital prepares a blood request which should


be given to the nearest PNRC Blood Service Facility.

A corresponding Blood Processing Fee will be charged


based on the type of blood component to be served.

Blood itself is free, having come from a volunteer


donor. The fee covers the cost of collecting and
processing.
