Free Piston Engine:
The free piston engine was proposed by Pescara during 1930’s was a successful alternative to conventional engine
and gas turbine.
Suitable to be used as air compressor or gas generator.
Engine which works without crankshaft.
Instead of crankshaft linear alternator or turbine is used to convert rotary motion into reciprocatory motion.
2
Principle:
Motion is restricted by rotating crankshaft.
Influenced by gas and load force acting upon that.
Used as gas generator, air compressor, hydraulic pump or generator.
Usually work on two stroke compression ignition or spark ignition
operating principle.
Power stroke is required on every cycle.

Dual Piston: Opposed Piston:
o Working piston act as a rebound device. • Consist of two single piston with a common a
combustion chamber.
o High power to weight ratio.
• Each piston requires a rebound device, a load
o Control of piston motion is difficult.
device may be couple with a one or both piston.
o Combustion process in one cylinder derives the • Perfectly balance and vibration free device.
• Due to elimination of cylinder head heat transfer
compression in other small variation in losses reduced.
combustion will influence the next compression • Allow uni—flow scavenging to be used, giving
high scavenging efficiency.
5
Applications: o These engine piston were opposed type,
making vibration free.
o Air compressor cylinders were coupled to
moving piston.
Free Piston Air Compressor: o High efficiency, low noise and vibration.
o Engines were highly supercharged operated
on high effective mean pressure.
6
o In figure during expansion stroke air in the
compressor cylinder is compressed.
o In compression stroke, the charge is
compressed and ignited.
7
Hydraulic Free Piston Engine:
o Hydraulic energy from the accumulator pushes the piston thereby
compressing the gases in combustion chamber, sucking of low
pressure oil through suction valve.

Conclusion:
o Several reports have confirmed that the free-piston engine is a viable
concept, more research is required to investigate potential advantages
over conventional technology.
o The area with most uncertainty is clearly that of piston motion control.
o Most of the potential advantages of the free-piston engine depend on
an appropriate control system being realizable.
