sales tax = tax rate · purchase price

total price = purchase price + sales tax

Example 1
A gold and diamond bracelet sells for $1800. Find the
total price if the sales tax rate is 6.5%.
sales tax tax rate purchase price

sales tax = 6.5% · $1800


= 0.065 · $1800
= $117 Sales Tax
$1800 + $117 = $1917 Total Price
The total price for the bracelet was $1917.00

Example 2
The sales tax on an $18,500 automobile is $1665. Find
the sales tax rate.
Let r represent the unknown sales tax rate. Then
sales tax = tax rate × purchase price
1665 = r × 18,500

1665 18,500r

0.09  r The sales tax rate is 9%.

month. What is his commission for the month if he is paid
a commission of 6.6% of his total sales for the month?
