What is the difference between
church and Church?
Church: Meaning and Nature
church
- a building or structure used for public Christian worship
Church: Meaning and Nature
Church
- is not a building; it is a group of
people. It is not a denomination; it is
everyone who has received the Holy
Spirit. And it doesn't grant salvation;
it is people, loving and glorifying God
and teaching others about a saving
knowledge of Christ. As believers, we
are joined with all Christians from
Peter to the smallest child in the
body of Christ
Church: Meaning and Nature
The Church
• new covenant people of God
• refer both to all believers
+both living and dead (universal church)
+individual local gatherings of believers (local church)
• has its roots in the promises made to God’s people in
the Old Testament, particularly that God would bless
the world through Abraham’s offspring.
Church: Meaning and Nature
While there is continuity between the Old Testament people of
God and the Church, the Church is the community of Jesus, new
at Pentecost.
• is the fulfillment of God’s promise to the prophets that he
would make a new and better covenant with his people and
write his law on their hearts.
Mission of the Chruch
• go out into the world with authority of the risen Christ
and make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them
to follow Jesus until he returns, all to the glory of God
3 categories of membership in the
Church
Baptized Christians
1. who accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior,
2. who accept the entire system and means of
salvation Christ left with the Church,
3. who devote themselves to continue Christ's
work of salvation according to their situation in
life
Origin of the Church
The Christian Church originated in Roman Judea in the first century
AD/CE, founded on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, who first
gathered disciples.

Those disciples later became known as "Christians"; according to

Scripture, Jesus commanded them to spread his teachings to all the
world.

For most Christians, the holiday of Pentecost represents the

birthday of the Church, signified by the descent of the Holy Spirit on
gathered disciples. The leadership of the Christian Church began
with the Apostles.
Marks of the Church
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord
Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father
before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us men and for our
salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake
he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and
was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with
the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
Marks of the Church
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father
and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess
one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to
the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

This is the Nicene Creed, written centuries ago to help

Christians remember the important beliefs of the faith. In the
Nicene Creed we identify the four marks of the Church.
Marks of the Church

The four marks of the Church are not characteristics

that the Church creates or develops or learns. They
are qualities that Jesus Christ shares with his Church
through the Holy Spirit. The four marks of the
Church are that it is
• One
• Holy
• Catholic
• Apostolic
The Church is One
Just as God is one in the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit, so also is the Church one. The
founder of the Church is Jesus Christ, who
brought us back to God and made us into the
family of God. The Church is one in the Holy
Spirit, who dwells in those who believe.
The Church is Holy
The Church is holy because the Church lives in
union with Jesus Christ, the source of holiness.
Through the Holy Spirit the Church leads others to
holiness. The holiness of the Church is seen in the
love that the members of the Church have toward
one another and the many sacrifices they make
for the sake of the world.
The Church is Catholic
Catholic means “universal.” The Church is
universal in two ways. First, the Church is catholic
because all baptized people are part of the Church
and the Church possesses the means of salvation.
Second, the mission of the Church is universal
because the Church has been sent to proclaim
Christ to the entire human race.
The Church is Apostolic
The Church traces its tradition directly from
the apostles; therefore, the Church is
considered apostolic. With the Holy Spirit the
Church preserves and continues the teaching
of the apostles. The pope and bishops are
the successors of the apostles.
Conclusion
“Church” is different from “church” for it refers to the
people of God not a building. As members of the
Church we can be categorized into three as mentioned.
And the Church originated when Jesus Christ gathered
the disciples and was formally celebrated during the
Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended into the
disciples. Lastly, the marks of the Church are that it is
One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic as identified in
Nicene Creed
