Thylakoid membranes
look like stacks of
pancakes. Contains the
green pigment called
chlorophyll.

Stroma is the liquid

that surrounds
the Thylakoid
membranes. The
“syrup” that covers
the thylakoid
membranes.
• The light-dependent reactions capture energy from sunlight.
– Purpose: energy, in the form of ATP (and other “batteries”), is created in this stage
– This energy is used to power stage 2
– take place in thylakoids (grana are stacks of thylakoid membranes)
– water and sunlight are needed
– chlorophyll (green pigment in the thylakoid membranes) absorbs energy
– oxygen is released
• The light-independent reactions make sugars.
– Purpose: In this stage is that C and O (from the carbon dioxide) and H (from some of
the water) is combined to form glucose
– The energy needed to create glucose comes from stage 1
– take place in stroma
– The glucose is stored in the stroma or converted to starch for storage
– This is a very complex cycle of chemical reactions

Step 1 - Glycolysis
– Purpose: to split glucose into small enough pieces so it can
enter through the mitochondria membrane
– anaerobic process (does not require oxygen)
– takes place in cytoplasm (not in the mitochondria)
– splits glucose in half
– produces two ATP molecules
Step 2 - Krebs cycle
– Purpose: The Krebs cycle creates a small bit of energy (ATP) that is
used to start the next stage.
Think of this as the “match striking” stage
– takes place in
mitochondrial matrix
– breaks down three-carbon 1 mitochondrion

of ATP energy

– Releases CO2 2

Step 3 - The electron transport chain
– Purpose: to produce a large amount of ATP
– Think of this as a campfire continually burning with the
constant addition of oxygen
– If you remove oxygen from a fire, it goes out, stops producing
energy
– takes place on the inner 1 mitochondrion
