SEXUALITY REALITIES
Culture and Religion
Most world religions have developed moral
codes that have sought to guide people’s
sexual activities and practices. The influence
of religion on sexuality is especially apparent
in many countries today in the long-debated
issue of gay marriage.
SEXUALITY REALITIES
Culture and Religion
Some religions view sex as a sacred act between a

man and a woman that should only be performed

within marriage; other religions view certain kinds
of sex as shameful or sinful, or stress that sex
should only be engaged in for the purpose of
procreation.
SEXUALITY REALITIES
Sexuality Across Cultures
Different cultures vary in regard to norms, including
how they understand and perceive sexuality, how they
influence the artistic expression of sexual beauty, how
they understand the relationship between gender and
sexuality, and how they interpret and/or judge particular
sexual behaviors.
SEXUALITY REALITIES
Sexuality and the Media
Mass media in the form of television, magazines,
movies, internet and music continues to shape
what is deemed appropriate or normal sexuality,
targeting everything from body image to products
meant to enhance sex appeal.
SEXUALITY REALITIES
Women’s Sexualities
American culture is particularly restrictive in its
attitudes about sex when it comes to women and
sexuality. It is widely believed that men are more
sexual than women, and the belief that men have or
have the right to more sexual urges than women
creates a double standard.

SEXUAL RESPONSE CYCLE
 The sexual response cycle refers to the
sequence of physical and emotional
changes that occur as a person becomes
sexually aroused and participates in
sexually stimulating activities, including
intercourse and masturbation.

Difficulties in Sexual Response

Sexual dysfunction is a term used to

describe any problem throughout the
sexual response cycle that prevents a
person from enjoying the experience.
Difficulties in Sexual Response
Here are some examples of sexual
dysfunction:
Disinterest or lack of desire for sex
Difficulty with physical arousal
For men- Difficulty with erection, ejaculation, and
orgasm
For women- Insufficient vaginal lubrication, pain
during coitus, and difficulty achieving orgasm
Medical conditions
GENDER AND SEXUALITY
ISSUES
I. INCREASE GENDER
REPRESENTATION/ GENDER
BALANCE
 One of the main objectives
set by UNI Global Union,
through its Equal
Opportunities Department
has been to attain
productive development
based on gender equality.
We regard this principle as
essential to achieving
sustainable development
and true social justice for
everyone.
II. VIOLENCE AGAINST
WOMEN
 The socially and culturally
built hierarchy between
the genders holds certain
power relationships. Any
power relationship is
asymmetrical by
definition, i.e. one of the
subjects of the relationship
has power and the other
one does not.
III.SEXUAL HARASSMENT
 Sexual harassment is a form of
violence that through a show
of power intimidates,
humiliates, and affects another
person’s dignity. This behavior
is sexual in nature (physical
contacts, sexual advances,
comments and jokes with
sexual content, exhibiting
pornographic material or
making inappropriate
comments
IV. THE WAGE GAP
 One of the areas at the workplace
where gender differences are seen
is the difference in the
remuneration that men and
women workers receive for work
of equal value. A study by the
International Labour Organization
in 2013 shows that the global
wage gap is 23%. This number
does not account for the millions
of women working in the
informal economy with no
protection.
V.WOMEN’S HEALTH
 To be able to truly
achieve gender equality,
we need to look at the
health and well-being of
women. This is a
precondition for the
promotion of the
sustainable growth of
our communities.
VI. WORK & LIFE BALANCE
 The traditional model of
sexual division of labour
had placed productive tasks
(supporting and providing
for the family) in the hands
of men and reproductive
ones in the hands of women
(caring for children and the
elderly, housekeeping
chores.)
VII. Abuse
 It is an unfortunate fact
that physical and
emotional abuse occurs
with alarming
regularity. Domestic
violence is often
targeted against women
and LGBTQ
individuals.
LGBTQ
 The LGBTQ
community contains a wide
range of people with gender
and sexual identities that
differ from traditionally
enforced social roles. These
include (but aren't limited
to) people who experience
sexual attractions to their
own genders, to more than
one gender, or whose
gender differs from that
assigned to them at birth.
