Overview
 Introduction: from 1G to 4G

 4G: principles & features

 Transmission technologies
 applications

 Conclusion
1G:FIRST GENERATION

 1G (or 1-G) refers to the first-

generation of wireless telephone
technology

 These are the analog telecommunications

standards that were introduced in the
1980s
2G:SECOND GENERATION

 By the end of the year 1980 the digital

telecommunication standards were
developed.

 These systems provided better voice

quality with higher capacity which even
costed low.
3G:THIRD GENERATION

 IMT-2000 is better known as 3G

 3G provide faster communication

services which include: voice ,fax
internet. Broadband capabilities to
support greater numbers of voice
and video calls.
4G:FOURTH GENERATION

 Support Interactive services like Video

Conferencing, Wireles Internet,etc.

 The networks will be all IP networks

based on IPv6.

 4G networks provide speeds of 100 Mbps

while moving and 1 Gbps while stationary.
What is 4G?
 The simple answer: 4G is the next major generation of mobile
cellular systems, to be deployed around the year 2010
 The multiple choice answer: The “twelve views” of 4G*

What is fourth generation (4G)
mobile systems?

Fourth generation mobile communications

systems that are characterised by high-
speed data rates at 20 to 100 Mbps,
suitable for high-resolution movies and
television, virtual . Initial deployments are
anticipated in 2006-2010.

 Companies developing 4G technology
 Cellular phone companies: Alcatel,
Nortel, Motorola
 IT Companies: HP,LG Electronics
Architecture
4G - OFDM Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
OFDM is being increasingly used
in high – speed information
transmission systems:
 European HDTV
 Digital Audio Broadcast
(DAB)
 Digital Subscriber Loop
OFDM characteristics (DSL)
• High peak-to-average power levels IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN
• Preservation of orthogonality in severe multi-path
• Support for adaptive modulation by subcarrier
• Frequency diversity
• Robust against narrow-band interference
• Efficient for simulcasting
• Variable/dynamic bandwidth
• Used for highest speed applications
• Supports dynamic packet access
4G Challenges

4G is Fabricated to lower the

 Power consumption

 Cost
4G POSSIBILITIES
Enhanced Mobile Gaming
4G 4G enhanced wireless capabilities
3G that deliver mobile gaming
interaction with latency less than
2G five milliseconds.

1G Play online multiplayer games

while traveling at high speeds or
sitting outside.
0G
4G POSSIBILITIES

4G Personal Media
Repository

3G Create a personal
media repository that
2G can be accessed from
home and on the road
1G to view photos, watch
movies and listen to
0G your personal music
collection.
4G POSSIBILITIES
Virtual Presence

4G
3G For example, decide if
you want to personally
2G respond when someone
rings your front door
1G while you are away from
home.
0G
4G BROADBAND ACCESS IN
REMOTE LOCATIONS

4G 4G networks will provide a

3G wireless alternative for broadband
access to residential and business
customers.
2G In addition, 4G will provide the
first opportunity for broadband
1G access in remote locations without
an infrastructure to support cable
0G
4G Access Options
 Embed 4G
technology into all
end-user devices

 Develop mobile
personal gateways

 Develop external
interfaces with 4G
peripherals

 Anywhere, Anytime with Anyone
 Global Mobility Support
 Integrated Wireless Solution
 Customized Personal Service
 According to 4G Mobile Forum, by 2008 over $400
billion would be invested in 4G mobile projects.
 In India, communication Minister Mr. Dayanidhi
Maran, has announced a national centre of
excellence to work in 4G arena.
