Rates of Change

• Describing motion of an object moving on a

straight line.
• How fast is something changing?

• Determine what is changing with respect to?

• Example 1 Find the rate of change of the area
of a circle per second with respect to its radius
r when r = 5 cm.
Example 2 The volume of a cube is increasing at
a rate of 9 cubic centimetres per second. How
fast is the surface area increasing when the
length of an edge is 10 centimetres ?
• Example 3 A stone is dropped into a quiet lake
and waves move in circles at a speed of 4cm
per second. At the instant, when the radius of
the circular wave is 10 cm, how fast is the
enclosed area increasing?
The edge of a cube are increasing at a rate of
10m/hr. (a) How fast is the volume of the rate of
change when the side length are 5m? (b) How
fast is the surface are of the cube changing
when the edge lengths are 8 cm? © How fast is
the length of the diagonal in the cube changing
when the lengths are 12 cm?
•A block
of ice in the form of a cube with sides x
cm, melts at a rate of 9.72 per minute. Find the
rate of change of x at the instant when x=12 cm.
Find the rate of change of the area of a
circle with respect to its radius r when
(a) r = 5 cm (b) r = 7 cm
• The volume of a cube is increasing at the rate
of 8 cm3/s. How fast is the surface area
increasing when the length of an edge is 12
cm?
•The  position of an object as a function of time t
is given by x = (5 m/) - (2 m/s)t + 4.0 m. (a) Give
the velocity and acceleration as function of time.
(b) Find the velocity and acceleration at t = 3.0s
•The  position of an object as a function of time t
is given by x = (3.5 m/) - (2 m/s)t + 5.0 m. (a)
