Zener Diode

1
• A Zener diode is a special type of
diode.
• Specially designed to operate in
reverse biased condition.
• As a voltage regulator or to provide
voltage reference.
• Zener diodes are heavily doped
compared to p-n junction diode.
Type of breakdown:
• Zener or Avalanche breakdown.
Zener Characteristics
• Always connected in
reverse biased
• Acts as an normal diode
in case of forward biased.
• Sharp breakdown voltage
(Vz)
Application
• Voltage or shunt regulator
• Meter protection
• Peak clipper
• Switching operation
• Reference element

ALL ABOUT ELECTRONICS

Volt- Ampere Characteristics

• The breakdown voltage is called Zener voltage (Vz)

• The sharply increased current is called Zener
current (Iz)
• The zener voltage depends upon the amount of
doping
• Vz: 2-200 Volts
• The forward characteristics is similar to diode.
Zener diode as voltage regulator
• Maintains a constant output voltage even when
either input voltage or load current varies.
• R: limit the reverse current
• The series resistor (R) absorbs the output
voltage fluctuation to maintain o/p voltage
constant.
• If Vout<Vz: Zener Diode OFF
• Zener diode maintains constant voltage across
load if supply voltage is greater than zener
voltage
Where Vz: is the zener voltage
Iz: is the zener current.

Light Emitting Diode (LED)
• In forward biased emits light
• In reverse bias does not emit light
• Can emit visible light
• Recombination of charge carriers results
in heat and light
• For Si & Ge, greater percentage of energy
is in the form of heat therefore
insignificant for light
• For GaAs, GaP, GaAsP: greater
percentage of energy after
recombination in the form of light
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
• The color of emitted light depends
on the type of material used:
• GaAs: infrared radiation(Invisible)
• GaP: Red or green light
• GaAsP: red or yellow (amber) light
• Forward voltage: 1.2-3.2 volt
• Reverse breakdown voltage: 3-10 V
Application of Light Emitting Diode (LED)
• Burglar alarm system
• Numeric display in hand held or
pocket calculator
• Displaying alphanumeric: letters
and numbers
• Optical fibre communication
system
• Video display
Schottky Diode
• Also called Schottky barrier diode or hot
carrier diode
• Mainly used as a rectifier for frequency
exceeding 300 MHz.
• Can be switched off faster than normal
diode
• It’s a metal-semiconductor junction diode
• No depletion layer
• It uses metal (gold, silver, platinum, etc.)
to one side and n-type Si semiconductor
to other side.
Schottky Diode

• Metal semiconductor
semiconductor
• Majority carrier device
• No charge storage region: fast speed Application:
• N-type semiconductor used • Clipper & clamper circuit
• High frequency signal rectification
• N-type is lightly doped • Switching device

• Operating freq: MHz to GHz

Solar Cell

• Converts energy of light into electricity by

photovoltaic effect
• Photovoltaic effect: creation of voltage
and electric current in a material upon
exposure of light.
• Photons in sun light hit the solar panel and
absorbed by semiconductor material (Si)
• An array of solar cells convert solar energy
into DC electricity
• The inverter converts DC to AC signal
