In this time of pandemic, you should be able to monitor yourself
more than anyone else because you own your body.
Thus, keeping it healthy always is your best protection against
diseases and body concerns. The healthier you are the better.

In this lesson you will learn more about how self-management


skills can prevent and manage the different personal issues and
concern of an individual.

What Is It?
As a grade 6 pupil, many of you
are experiencing changes in your
body due to puberty.
PUBERTY is the name for the
time when your body begins to
develop and change as you move
from kid to adult.
We’re talking about stuff like
girls developing breasts and boys
starting to look like men.

CERUMEN
-is when earwax builds up in the ear and
blocks the ear canal.it can cause temporary
hearing loss and ear pain. Impacted cerumen
can cause earaches, temporary loss, ringing
in the ears , coughing or a feeling that the
ear is full or plugged. It also can increase the
risk of an outer ear infection. Impacted
cerumen should be removed by a doctor to
help avoid damaging of the ear. Treatment
option include removing the earwax with
instruments or by flushing the ear canal with
special liquids.

SWIMMER’S EAR
(otitis externa)

-is an infection of the ear


canal the passage that
carries sounds from the
outside of the body to the
eardrum.It can be caused by
many different types of
bacteria or fungi. It is
common in kids who spend a
lot of time in the water.

OTITIS MEDIA

-is a group of inflammatory


diseases of the middle ear.
This infection happens
when viruses or bacteria
get into the middle of the
ear the space behind the
ear drum. When a child has
an ear infection the middle
ear fills with pus (infected
fluid). The pus pushes on
the eardrum,which can be
very painful.

- refers to eye movement


control and eye coordination.
Something that is hazy and
indistinct to the sight.

ASTIGMATISM
- is a type of refractive error in
which the eye does not focus
light evenly on the retina. This
results in distorted or blurred
vision at all distances.

MYOPIA
(near sightedness)

-also known as short-


sightedness and myopia. Is a
condition of the eye where
light focuses in front of,
instead of on retina. This
causes distant objects to be
blurry while close objects may
appear normal.

HYPEROPIA
(FAR-SIGHTEDNESS)
- also known as long sightedness
and hyperopia is a condition of
the eye in which light is focused
behind, instead of on the
retina. This cause close objects
to be blurry while far objects
may appear normal.

XEROPHTHALMIA
-is a medical condition in
which the eye fails to produce
tears. It may be cause by
vitamin A deficiency which is
sometimes used to describe
that condition although there
may be other causes.

- also called crossed eyes
(duling) is a condition in which

with each other when looking
at an object.

management helps you to
identify when you must take
personal responsibility and
develop the necessary health
practices to maintain and
improve your health.
It is the ability to manage
oneself.

 - is important when monitoring an infant
or child’s health. It is used to calculate
your body mass index, or BMI, a measure
of healthy versus unhealthy weight. They
are also important when tracking a
child’s growth. BMI can be used for
assessment of underweight, overweight
and obesity.

 Procedure a woman can do to examine her
breast and underarm areas physically and
visually for changes.it has not been shown that
BSEs alone can accurately determine the
presence of breast cancer.it helps doctor check
that everything is normal. Doctors do not usually
start doing breast exams until a girl is in her
20’s. During breast exam a doctor or nurse
practitioner will feel a woman’s breast to check
any lumps and bumps and see if there are
Breast changes.

 A hearing (audiometric) test is part of an
ear exam that test how well a person
can hear. It is done by measuring how
well sound can reach the brain.

 Also called an eye test, is a brief exam that
looks for potential vision problems and eye
disorders. Vision screening are often done
by primary care providers or professionals
as part of a child’s regular checkup.
Sometimes screening are given to children
by school nurses. It is usually conducted
with the use of a Snelle chart.

 This is a simple screening test that can detect
potential problems. If you notice any
unevenness, you should contact your doctor for
an exam. Using a scoliometer can help
determine the severity of the curve. During the
physical exam, the doctor may ask you to bend
forward to check your spine. Scoliosis is usually
confirmed by taking X-ray of the entire spine
looking from front to back.

 During a dental exam, the dentist or hygienist
will clean your teeth and cheek for activities and
gum disease. The exam includes evaluating your
risk of developing other oral problems and
checking your face,neck and mouth for
abnormalities.

Health Appraisal Procedures

♥ It is a series of procedures to assess or determine the health status of students.

♥ The health status of the students is determine using Teacher’s observation ,


screening test , health histories , family history , dental history , current status ,
and screening procedures.

♥ Undergoing health appraisal procedures allows us to control the risk of developing


certain medical conditions.

♥ It also helps us to take action if there are existing issues and concern in the body

♥ Health appraisal procedures are conducted in Barangay Health Stations , Rural


Health Clinics , Hospitals and in the School Clinic. 41
