UNIT I
• Biodiversity: Definition, Types, Significance and Values. Genetic
Diversity, Species Diversity and Ecosystem Diversity. Values –
Consumptive use value, Productive use value, ethical value, Aesthetic
value, Social value, and Optional value for research and development
activities and need for ethical clearance. (8

UNIT II
• Biogeographical classification of India. Biodiversity at global, national and
local levels, India as a mega diversity nation, Hotspots in India – Western
Ghats, Biosphere reserves in India – Gulf of Mannar, Threats to
Biodiversity – Habitat loss, poaching of Wildlife, Man – Wildlife conflicts.
UNIT III
• IUCN - Red Data Book. Conservation Methods – In-situ and Ex-situ,
Cryopreservation and Germplasm. National Parks, Sanctuaries and Sacred
grooves. Endangered and endemic species of India. Biological diversity
Protection Act 2002.

• Pollution - Air, Water and Noise - Causes, effects and control measures.

UNIT V
• Disposal and Management of Solid Waste: 3 R Principle – Reduction,
Reuse and Recycle. Types of Solid Wastes, Solid Waste Management – Land
filling, Composting, Incineration, Pyrolysis, E-waste and plastic waste.
