WHAT IS “AUTISM”

COMMON SIGNS OF AUTISM?
• A common sign of autism is repletely doing something again and again.
Asking the same question over and over, wanting to wear the same
clothes all the time, avoiding eye contact & upset by minor changes.
• Other signs are repeated actions when exited or stressed such as
rocking back and forth, flapping their hands or making “random” noises.
• It is very common for someone with Autism to have speech difficulties or
a hard time communicating. Social impairments are extremely common.
WHAT SOCIAL CHALLENGES DO
AUTISTIC PEOPLE FACE?
• One challenge of autism is when people are unable to communicate with their
voices or with the help of technology. Not being able to talk /communicate
makes it hard to create friendships.
• Many people with Autism take things literally. They have a hard time
understanding body language, sarcasm, jokes, slang, tone of voice and eye gaze.
• Many people have low social skills, obsessive interests, are not aware of others
needs and how to interact properly. This makes maintaining friendships
difficult

SOME COMMUNICATION
DIFFICULTIES?
• Roughly 25% of people with autism are nonverbal.
• Some people with Autism may use assistive technology
to communicate their wants or needs.
• Echolalia is common. This is where the person repeats
words / sounds they hear seconds after they hear it or maybe months
after.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON BEHAVIORS?
• Some people with autism may have behaviors from frustration
because the person cant talk or share what they want or need.

• Since some autistic people are extremely sensitive to loud noises,


smells or touches they may have behaviors while trying to
compensate for what they are experiencing.

• It can be diagnosed by, reactions to emotions and social interactions.


WHAT TESTS ARE USED TO DIAGNOSE
AUTISM?

• Some tests used may be diagnosing autism can be difficult, since there is
no medical test, like a blood test. Some people might look at
developmental progress to make a diagnosis. Autism can sometimes be
diagnosed at 18 months or younger.

• There lots of coping strategies ranging from simply covering there


ears in a loud place to asking to take a break from what there
doing. There are a lot of coping strategies some a lot of those
might be used by anyone on any given day.

MAKING FRIENDS

• Because of communication difficulties its harder for autistic


people to make friends because some might talk but talk to much
or some might not talk at all and some might be fine at making
friends.
GRADUATING FROM SCHOOL

• People with autism can do good in school. Autistic people may have
subjects there good at and some there not good at or they may be
ok at most subject or maybe not good at most subjects but with
help they can graduate
