DEFINITION AND CATEGORIES
• Biodegradable polymers are a special class of polymer that breaks down after
its intended purpose by bacterial decomposition process to result in natural
byproducts such as gases (CO2, N2), water, biomass, and inorganic salts.
• Biodegradable polymers are found both naturally as well as synthetically made
• Natural biodegradable polymers are called biopolymers. Polysaccharides, as
starch and cellulose, represent the most characteristic family of these natural
polymers.
• Synthetic polymers are human-made polymers. They are commonly found in
a variety of consumer products. Various main chains and side chains are used
to make different synthetic organic polymers.
STRUCTURES
• Polyactic Acid(PLA)

• Polyglycolic Acid(PGA)

• Proteins
USES AND APPLICATIONS
• Biodegradable polymers have an innumerable uses in the biomedical field,
particularly in the fields of tissue engineering and  nanomedicine.
• Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin,
and blood. We also use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and
other body chemicals.
• In addition to medicine, biodegradable polymers are often used to reduce
the volume of waste in packaging materials.
• One of the most commonly used polymers for packaging purposes
is polylactic acid, PLA. PLA is used for a variety of films, wrappings, and
containers (including bottles and cups).
TAKE HOME MESSAGE
• Biodegradable polymers are broken down by bacterial decomposition
process to result in natural byproducts such as  water, biomass, and
inorganic salts.
• They are divided into two categories: Natural and Synthetic
• Example: PGA and Proteins
• Used in packaging materials and biomedical field.
• Also used in fields of tissue engineering.
