What is literature and why study this?

A Latin word which means “a letter of the


alphabet,” literature is first and foremost
humankind’s entire body of writing; after that
it is the body of writing belonging to a given
language or people; then it is individual pieces
of writing.
What is literature?
- is a body of written works. The name has
traditionally been applied to those
imaginative works of poetry and prose
distinguished by the intentions of their
authors and the perceived aesthetic
 excellence of their execution.
- It makes you read, analyze and question the
thinking of the writer whose story you are
examining and then somehow relate to it.
Why study literature?
- It opens the gateway to unbound imagination
and allowing the intellect to grow by
perceiving so many ideas out there, provided
to you in the form of words.
- It allows to dissect words, questions that
piece of knowledge, examines that burst of
idea, scrutinizes the symbolic meanings, and
critically analyzes the writer’s philosophy.
Why study literature?
- starts dwelling on human nature and the
situations that we as beings find ourselves in,
in this world. As a result, YOU develop a
profound sense of life
- mind becomes perceptive, knowledgeable,
polished and one that sees the world with a
deeper eye
- It is a kind of SUBJECT that gives one the
