What type of look is established for the film

For the scenes where the

past times are being
shown, there is color.
Showing happy and more
cheerful times.
The film has a
very grainy, old
style look to it.

For the scenes where the

present times are being
shown, the film turns
black and white.
Showing gloomy and
more depressing times.
Film Stock used
Fast Film Stock-
• Creating a fairly unclear
picture
• Produces a gritty,
monochromatic look.

Film Gauged used

Shot with a 16 mm film gauge
enlarged onto a 35 mm film in order
to enhance the grainy effect.

Slow Film Stock-

• produces a sharper, more
detailed effect
How the use of color fit the tone of the film

Past Time:
-using bright, vivid colors
-creates joyful and very effective imagery
-Showing affectionate and happier times times
of their lives

Present Time:
-dull black and white colors
-establishing a very sad and depressing tone
-showing a time of loss and grief
Saturated or desaturated colors

Majority of the film (The scenes

from the past) are saturated.
As you can see, the still image
on the top is what the actual
coloring in the film looked like,
and the still image on the
bottom is what the same image
from the film would've looked
like if the coloring was de-
Saturated version  saturated.

De-saturated version
Lighting
Hard lighting was used;
looking at the still image from the
film on the left, the lighting highlights
her shadows and flaws.

Compared to this image

on the right, which is a
photograph of the exact
same actress, except soft
lighting was used; soft
lighting softens the border
between light and
shadow.

In Majority of the film, High-Key lighting is

used. As the film is based on the narrator's
parent's cheerful past, almost all of it is
bright and dandy.
-Bright illumination of subject
-enhances a cheerful mood
Different Lenses

Wide Angle Lens used to shoot

scene on the left; emphasizes
distance.

Telephoto Lens used to shoot the

scene on the right; creates a shallow
focus :)
The 180° rule
-Camera must remain on the side of the
'imaginary line'

-'imaginary line' has to be perpendicular to

the camera's view point , from which
establishing shot is taken

The rule of thirds

-Dividing the frame into thirds

both horizontally and vertically

-The points where the vertical and

horizontal lines meet are called the
aesthetically pleasing spot

-Aesthetically pleasing spots are to have

perspective lines meet or to place
subjects
Special effects

Bloom☼

-It makes the pictures look

brighter and have a 'hazy'
look to it

-In here it is added to create

a 'in love' effect.
Creative Techniques
One of the most creative techniques in this film (probably the most important), is how
Zhang Yimou did the whole "color vs black and white" scheme. Just that aspect of the
film, conveys a strong message and you are able to grasp the main idea of the
movie.
-Past = happy and bright, filled with color
-Present = sad and depressed, no color at all.
This was a very creative technique. Not to mention the beautiful places where the film
was shot in. Zhang Yimou did a magnificent job in really showing the audience how
strong the love connection between Zhao Di and Luo Changyu (the two main
characters) is.
