ENDOCRINE

SYSTEM
Glands, Hormones, and Functions
(Hypothalamus-Pancreas)
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
 The endocrine system is made up of glands that
produce and secrete hormones, chemical
substances produced in the body that regulate the
activity of cells or organs. These hormones
regulate the body’s growth, metabolism, (the
physical and chemical processes of the body), and
sexual development and functions. The hormones
are released into the bloodstream and may affect
one or several organs throughout the body.
 Hormones are chemical messengers created by the
body. They transfer information from one set of
cells to another to coordinate the functions of
different parts of the body.

 A Gland is an organ that makes and puts out

hormones that do a specific job in your body.
Endocrine glands release the substances they make
into your bloodstream.
 There are at least 50 different types of these
chemical messengers at work in your body at this
very minute.
Your hormone control and regulate:
-Reproduction
-Metabolism and energy balance
-Growth and development
-Body defenses
-General homeostasis and water, nutrient, and
electrolyte balance of the blood.
 Ifyour endocrine system isn’t healthy, you might
have problems developing during puberty, getting
pregnant, or managing stress. You also might gain
weight easily, have weak bones, or lack energy
because too much sugar stays in your blood
instead of moving into your cells where it’s needed
for energy.
FUNCTIONS
 Both your Endocrine System and Nervous System
are constantly trafficking information around your
corpus, gathering inter, making demands,
controlling your every more.
 Your Nervous System uses neurons to send and
deliver messages that are fast-acting, localized, and
short-lived, while you Endocrine System sends
slower-moving hormones through the blood that
target board areas and have more lingering effects.
 Makes hormones that control your moods, growth
and development, metabolism, organs, and
reproduction.

 Controls how your hormones are released.

 Sends those hormones into your bloodstream so

they can travel to other body parts.
Parts of the ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
 Many glands make up the Endocrine System. The
Hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and pineal gland
are in your brain. The Thyroid and Parathyroid
glands are in your neck. The Thymus is between
your lungs, and adrenals are on top of your
kidneys and the pancreas is behind your stomach.
Your ovaries (if you’re a women) or testes (if
you’re a man) are in your pelvic region.
THYROID GLAND
 This gland makes thyroid hormone, which controls
your metabolism. If this gland doesn’t make
enough (a condition called hypothyroidism),
everything happens more slowly. Your heart rate
might slow down. You could get constipated. And
you might gain weight. If it makes too much
(hypothyroidism), everything speeds up. Your
heart might race. You could have diarrhea. And
you might lose weight without trying.
PARATHYROID GLAND
GLAND HORMONE TYPE FUNCTION
-Parathyroid -parathyroid -peptide -increase blood
Gland hormone calcium levels
through
uptake by
bone.
PANCREAS
 This organ is part of both your digestive and
endocrine system it makes digestive enzymes that
break down food. It also makes the hormones
insulin and glucagon. These ensure you have the
right amount of sugar in your bloodstream and
your cells.
