Experiment # 2

DO, EC, turbidity and

pH measurements
Objectives
 In this experiment, we will measure 4
parameters:

1. Dissolved Oxygen (DO)

2. Electrical Conductivity (EC)
3. Turbidity
4. pH
1) DO: Theory
 Dissolved Oxygen (DO): the amount of oxygen that’s
dissolved in water which help to determine the
number and type of organisms living in a water body.

 DO depends on:
1. Temperature
2. Salinity
3. Pressure

 Units:
1. By Weight: parts per million (ppm) or mg/l
2. By volume: percent (%)
1) DO: Instrument

Dissolved Oxygen meter

1) DO: Instrument
Notes:
 DO reading is an indication of biological

pollution.

 The meter reads DO in both mg/l and percent

 Maximum storage time for DO reading is: 30

minutes

 DO meter is a portable device

2) EC: Theory

Electrical Conductivity (EC): the ability of
water to conduct an electrical current which is
stimulated by dissolved ions in water (from
salts)

 Units: siemens/cm
1. Micro-siemens/cm (µs/cm)
2. Milli-siemens/cm (ms/cm)
2) EC: Instrument

Electrical Conductivity
meter
2) EC: Instrument
Notes:

 Maximum storage time for EC reading is: 48

hours

 EC reading is related to total dissolved solids

(TDS) to be explained in experiment #2
3) Turbidity: Theory
 Turbidity: the amount of particles suspended in
water which causes water to be haze.

 Turbidity depends on suspended particles which are:

1. Silt, clay
2. Organic & in-organic matter
3. Planktons

 Units: NTU
1. NTU; National Turbidity Unit
2. FTU; Nephelometric Turbidity Unit

◦ Time affects turbidity reading

3) Turbidity: Instrument

Turbidity meters
3) Turbidity: Instrument
Notes:

 The device transmits a beam of light through the inserted

sample

 Turbidity value is a ratio of absorbed, scattered versus

transmitted light through a water sample

 Maximum storage time for turbidity is: 24 hours

 Turbidity reading is related to total suspended solids (TSS)

to be explained in experiment #2

 Turbidity meter is a portable device

4) pH: Theory

pH: a measure of hydrogen ion concentration,
acidity or alkalinity of a solution.

 pH < 7 Acidic solution

 pH > 7 Basic solution

 Drinking water pH (6.5 – 7.5)

4) pH: Instrument

pH meter
4) pH: Instrument
Notes:

 pH measurement is important for titrations

 pH meter is a portable device

Calculations
The solids values calculated from these equations are an
estimate and will be compared to the gravimetric
method in experiment #3
