Question Prompt
Let us take a question - Agree / disagree

In many countries it has been seen that people are suffering from health issues as a
result of consuming too much fast food. It is therefore necessary for governments to
impose a higher tax on this kind of food.

To what extent do you agree or disagree

Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your knowledge
and experience. Write at least 250 words .
With this type of essay we have two choices:

We agree with the statement or;

We disagree with the statement
So for this agree or disagree essay you can
say either:
■ I completely agree that governments should impose tax fast food or;
■ I totally disagrees that governments should impose tax tax fast food
Idea generation
Here are some:
 Cigarettes and alcohol should be taxed higher
 The money that is raised could be utilised to treat people with health conditions
 Fast food companies should be given warning regarding their ingredients for selling
unhealthy food to people.
 The food should not moderately rate so that control can be brought .
 The money raised could be used to create awareness among people about healthy
eating
As you can see there are so many ideas .We would not
use all of them . We would choose any 2 to expand in
our essay.
Introduction

■ I completely agree that governments should levy a tariff on junk food because the
number of health risks associated with consuming this kind of food is on the rise. In
this essay I would discuss that a higher rate of tax should be paid by fast food
companies. Firstly, this essay will discuss the fact that alcohol and tobacco
companies already pay higher taxes and secondly, discuss how higher taxes would
raise prices and lower consumption.
Para -1

■ High taxes on liqueur and cigarettes has proven to be successful at curbing the
harm caused by these substances. This revenue has been used to treat health
problems associated with these products and has proven useful in advertising
campaigns making people aware about the health problems that could be caused
because of alcohol and tobacco abuse. The United Kingdom is a prime example,
where money from people who smokes is used for the treatment of lung cancer and
heart disease.
Para -2

■ Increasing taxes would raise prices and lower consumption. Fast food companies
would pass on these taxes to consumers in the form of higher prices and this would
lead to people not being able to afford junk food because it is too expensive. Junk
food would soon become a luxury item and it would only be consumed occasionally,
which would be less harmful to the general public’s health. For instance, the cost of
organic food has proven prohibitively expensive for most people and that is why only
a small percentage of the population buy it regularly.
Conclusion

■ In the end I would like to conclude by saying that junk food should be taxed at a
higher rate because of the good precedent set by alcohol and tobacco and the fact
that the increased cost should reduce the purchase amount of fast food.
WHAT IS PASSIVE VOICE ALL ABOUT.
 In the active voice, the subject of the sentence DOES the action:
Jami wrote a report. subject / verb / object
 In the passive voice, the subject of the sentence is acted upon:
A report was written (by Jami). subject / verb
 Notice that the object of the active sentence (report) became the subject of the
passive sentence.
If we want, we can include "by Jami" to say who did the action.
We do not include "by..." when:
The doer of the action is unknown:
 The necklace was stolen. The doer of the action is "people in general":
 Black cats are believed to be unlucky.
The doer of the action is completely unimportant
This road was built back in 18th century . (probably by a construction company)
You should remember

The passive voice is formed by a form of the verb TO BE + past participle

of the main verb.
The form of the verb “to be” is the same as the form of the original main

Things to remember
 Note that the form of the verb "to be" is singular or plural depending on the new
subject of the sentence:
 Teachers are using the new teaching style in their classrooms. (teachers = plural, so
we use "are")
 A new teaching style is being used in classrooms. (A new teaching style = singular,
so we use "is")
 My co-worker was ignoring the safety regulations(My co-worker = singular, so we
use "was")
 The safety regulations were being ignored. (regulations = plural, so we use "were")
Summary
In the active voice, the subject of the sentence DOES the action. In the
passive voice, the subject of the sentence is acted upon.
The passive voice is formed by a form of the verb TO BE + past
participle of the main verb. The verb TO BE can be conjugated in various
tenses.
The passive voice is used when the person who did the action is
unknown, obvious/unimportant, "people in general," or less important
than the object.
We can include “by… (the doer)” if we know who did the action and
want to mention it because it is somewhat important.
