    Graphic Organizers
    Graphic Organizers and Their Functions
    • Graphic organizers are visual
    representation of knowledge that
    structures information by arranging
    important aspects of a concept or
    topic into a pattern using labels
    (Bromley, DeVitis & Modlo).
    • Their main function is to help
    present information in concise ways
    that highlight the organization and
    relationships of concepts.
    Types of Graphic Organizers
    • Concept Map
    A concept map is a general
    organizer that shows a
    central idea with its
    corresponding
    characteristics. Concept
    maps can take many
    different shapes and can be
    used to show any type of
    relationship that can be
    labeled. Maps can be used
    to show hierarchical
    relationships with the most
    important concepts placed
    at the top.
    • Flow Diagram or Sequence
    Chart
    A flow diagram or sequence
    chart shows a series of steps or
    events in the order in which
    they take place. Any concept
    that has a distinct order can be
    displayed in this type of
    organizer. In reading, sequence
    charts can be used to outline
    the key events in a story or
    chapter. In science, they can
    serve as the procedures section
    in the scientific process. In
    history, they can be created as a
    timeline.
    • Compare/Contrast or
    Venn Diagram
    A compare/contrast or
    Venn diagram is used to
    identify the similarities
    and differences between
    two or more concepts. It
    uses overlapping circles
    to represent different
    objects or ideas that
    share similar
    characteristics in some
    way. The intersection or
    the area where the circles
    overlap shows the
    characteristic that is
    common between or
    among the objects or
    ideas.
    3 Circle Venn Diagram
    • Cycle Diagram
    Cycle Diagrams show
    how items are related
    to one another in a
    repeating cycle. Use a
    cycle diagram when
    there is no beginning
    and no end to a
    repeating process.
    Group Activity
    • Read the text and plot
    the information using
    the appropriate graphic
    organizer.
    IDEA TO PONDER
    • Graphic organizers are of
    great help especially when
    you want to show
    relationship, visualize and
    simplify ideas, and
    organize information.
