What is Green Communication?
Energy-harvesting technologies/
Renewable Energy

– The main renewable energy sources being considered for wireless

communications are
– Solar Energy
– Wind Energy
– The advantages of these energy sources is
– maintenance-free
– pollution-free
– requires no transport or storage of oil/diesel, immune to the cost escalation of fuel
Power Requirements of Base
Stations
– Cut down by
– powering down the BS outside of peak hours
– shortening of cables to the power amplifier
– overall better design of power amplifiers
– reducing the cooling costs
– This makes solar or wind powered base stations a practical solution requiring fewer and
smaller solar panels and wind turbines.
– With modern technology, a 10 sq ft. solar panel can generate 100–200W at 12 volt. One can
combine panels in parallel or series to increase the current and/or voltage
– One can generate 10KW–50KW from wind speeds beyond 5 m/sec. Thus, there is a great
potential to use micro wind turbines to power wireless BSs.
– The energy spent in a BS has the following components:
1. Energy for baseband processing: modulation, coding and transmission
interface processing.
2. Energy for transmission to the BSC/RNC.
3. Energy dissipated in cable feeders, AC/DC converters, etc.
4. Energy used in transmission of data and control signals.

WHY
GREEN COMMUNICATIONS?

Information and Communication

Technology(ICT) contributes 2%
of CO2 emission.
• The first problem of the high levels of
energy consumption is that it is often
necessary to use fossil fuel (e.g. diesel),
which produces large amounts of GHG.
• The figures are going to triple next year!
CONCERNS
– Concern in WIRELESS technology is energy
efficiency
– Energy consumption is expected to drastically
rise
– Serious economic and ecological concerns
– Increased in amount of CO2 in atmosphere
due to higher power consumption
Energy Consumption Survey
– (ICT) industry include the energy requirements as follows;
– PCs and monitor = 40% , Data Centre = 23% , Fixed and mobile
telecommunication = 24%
– 40% Power requirement = Grid Electricity
– 60% Power requirement = Diesel Gen-Set
– 1 litre petrol ==2.3Kgs CO2

TECHNIQUES
Cell shaping techniques

The technique that

yields higher energy
reduction at a
network
scale.
1. CELL SHAPING TECHNIQUES
– Best way to decrease energy consumption in cellular network
is to adapt cell layout traffic distribution by cell shaping.
– The basic idea is to turn off most of the base stations during
low traffic period.
– For switching off, its necessary that the base station about to
be deactivated redistribute the traffic to their closest
neighbors.
– Some base stations will not be able to redistribute their traffic
and will remain active ,and this is said as ‘cell is breathing’

2. Macro -femto radio
phone network
that provides
access deployments
radio coverage
served by a high
power cellular
base station
(tower).
A femto cell is a
small, low-power
cellular base
station, typically
designed for use in
a home or small
business
2. FEMTO CELLS
– Femto cells are good solution to
enforce the capacity of a macro cell
deployment without a high
increase in energy consumption.
– This avoids introduction of new
macro BS’s to extend coverage and
availability.
3. REPEATERS
– Device used for boosting the cell
phone reception.
– Similar to the cellular broadcast
towers used for broadcasting
– by the network providers.
– They are smaller, usually intended for
use in one building.
