LIFE SKETCH :

DR. SARVEPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
was not just a Teacher ,
but also
an accomplished Scholar,
a distinguished Philosopher,
a consummate Statesman,
an effective Diplomat.
EARLY LIFE
 He was born on 5 September 1888 in
Thiruttani in erstwhile Madras Presidency .

 His early years were spent in Thiruttani


and Tirupati .

 Primary education was at K V High School


at Thiruttani

 In 1896 he moved to the Hermansburg


Evangelical Lutheran Mission School
in Tirupati and Government High
Secondary School, Walajapet.

 Awarded scholarships throughout his


academic life.
He joined Voorhees
College in Vellore but
switched to the
Madras Christian
College at the age of
17

He graduated in
1906 with a
Master’s degree in
Philosophy, being
one the most
distinguished
alumni.

Thesis for the M.A. degree was on "The Ethics of the Vedanta and
its Metaphysical Presuppositions".
CAREER
 Embarked academic career
and joined Department of
Philosophy at the Madras
Presidency college in 1909.

 He mastered the classics of


Hindu Philosophy namely the
Madras Presidency college Upanishads ,Bhagvad Gita ,
Ramunuja and Madhava.

 In 1918, Sarvepalli
Radhakrishnan was selected
as the professor of Philosophy
at the University of Mysore.

 In1921, he assumed King George V Chair of Mental and
Moral Science at University of Calcutta.

 He represented Calcutta university at


 The Congress of the Universities of the British Empire
in June 1926 .
 The International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard
University in September 1926.

 In 1929 , he was invited to deliver the Hibbert Lecture on


the ideals of life, at Harris Manchester College, Oxford.
 Vice-Chancellor of Andhra
University from 1931 to 1936.

 Named Spalding Professor of


Eastern Religions and Ethics at the
University of Oxford

 Elected a Fellow of All Souls


College.

 1939, he became Vice-Chancellor of


Banaras Hindu University.

He was Knighted in the year 1931, and called as “Sir Sarvepalli


Radhakrishnan.”

Post-independence, he came to be known as Dr. Sarvepalli


Radhakrishnan.
 He represented India at
UNESCO from 1946 to 1952.
 He was also the Ambassador
of India to the Soviet Union
from 1949 to 1952.
 Elected as the first Vice-
President of India in 1952,

 Succeeded to become the second


President of India in 1962.
 Dr Radhakrishnan retired as
president in 1967 and settled in
Madras.
 He passed away on April 17, 1975.
WRITINGS
 Renowned Author and penned
books such as :
 ‘Indian Philosophy’ (two
volumes, 1923–27),
 ‘The Philosophy of the
Upanishads’ (1924),
 ‘An Idealist View of Life’ (1932), ‘
 Eastern Religions and Western
Thought’ (1939), and
 ‘East and West: Some
Reflections’ (1955).
Dr. Radhakrishnan said,

“Instead of celebrating my
birthday separately, it would be
my proud privilege if
September 5 is observed as
‘Teachers’ Day’.

It was in 1962, when Dr.


Radhakrishnan became the
President of India, that his
birthday in came to be observed
as 'Teachers' Day'.
