An air pump maintains the required vacuum in a condenser by removing air and condensate using reciprocating or rotary pumps, with dry pumps removing only air and wet pumps removing mixtures, helping provide lower turbine back pressure and improved efficiency. The Edward's Air Pump design is successful with only two moving parts, using momentum and water compression to pump without flashing into steam.

AIR PUMP
History In the year 1650, Otto
von Guericke Definition invented the spool vacuum air pump and Purpose was called as air pump in 19th century. Types The first effective air pump constructed in England for scientific purposes was made in 1658 by Robert Hooke for Robert Boyle. History Definition Purpose Types
Air pump is a machine which is used in
the condenser to remove condensate air from the condenser. Basically, air pump creates a vacuum in the condenser as nearly as possible, corresponding to exhaust steam temperature. History • Air pump maintains the required vacuum in the Definition condenser by removing Purpose air or both air and condensate. Types • It also removes inward c air leakage from the condenser. The effect is to provide lower turbine back pressure, improve heat rates and reduce generating costs. History Definition Commonly, dry air pumps and wet air pumps Purpose are used to maintain the Types required vacuum in the condenser. Dry air pump removes air only, whereas the wet air pump removes the mixture of condensate, water and other gases. These pumps may be reciprocating type or rotary type. Edward’s Air Pump The Edward’s Air Pump design is one of the most successful designs of air pump. It is a simple design with only two moving parts, it makes use of the fact that water contains momentum and at the same time compressing the water to prevent it from flashing into steam. This pump consists of a piston which reciprocates in the pump barrel. The piston is flat on it’s upper surface and conical at the bottom. The barrel has a ring of ports near its lower end through which it communicates with the condenser. Working Principle
1. Piston moves down
2. Delivery valve closes 3. Air and water vapors pass through the ports 4. Piston moves up 5. Head valves open
