• The creep valves are safety valves installed in gas lines downstream
of the PCV (pressure control valve). When the PCV is unable to
maintain the downstream pressure and it exceeds a set limit, the
creep safety valve relieves the excess pressure and maintains the line
pressure.

Turbine flow meter
Meter uses the mechanical energy of the fluid to rotate a “pinwheel” (rotor).
Blades on the rotor are angled to transform energy from the flow into rotational energy.
The rotor shaft spins on bearings. When the fluid moves faster, the rotor spins
proportionally faster.
Blade movement is often detected magnetically, with each blade or embedded piece of
metal generating a pulse.
Turbine flowmeter sensors are typically located external to the flowing stream to avoid
material of construction constraints that would result if wetted sensors were used.
The transmitter processes the pulse signal to determine the flow of the fluid. Transmitters
and sensing systems are available to sense flow in both the forward and reverse flow
directions.
Plusses and Minuses
The cost is moderate.
Very good at clean, low viscosity fluids of moderate velocity and a
steady rate.
Turndown is very good as it can read very low compared to the
maximum flow. They are reliable if put in a clean fluid especially if it
has some lubricity.
They do cause some pressure drop where that may be a factor such
as gravity flows. Not reliable for steam. Bearings wear out.
Turbine Flowmeters
High accuracy turbine flowmeters are available for custody transfer of hydrocarbons and
natural gas.
the functionality of a flow computer to correct for pressure, temperature and fluid
properties in order to achieve the desired accuracy.
Be careful using turbine flowmeters on fluids that are non-lubricating because the
flowmeter can become inaccurate and fail if its bearings prematurely wear. Some turbine
flowmeters have grease fittings for use with non-lubricating fluids.
Turbine flowmeters that are designed for a specific purpose, such as for natural gas
service, can often operate over a limited range of temperature (such as up to 60ºC)
whereby operation at higher temperatures can damage the flowmeter.
Smaller turbine flowmeters can be installed directly in the piping, but the size and
weight of larger turbine flowmeters may require the installation of substantial concrete
foundations and supports
Applications for turbine flowmeters are found in the water, petroleum, and chemical
industries.
Petroleum applications include the custody transfer of hydrocarbons. Miscellaneous
applications are found in the food and beverage, and chemical industries.
Odorization unit
• The natural gas being odourless, it is recommended by PNGRB and as
per safe practices, the natural gas supplied to customers through, the
City Gas Distribution System should be odorized for facilitating the
early detection of gas, when it leaks, before it causes hazards like fire
/ explosion and asphyxiation.
• Adequate odour / smell is imparted to piped natural gas by
continuously dozing controlled quantity of odorant chemical, in the
flowing gas supply.
• Normally Ethyl Mercaptan chemical is used as odorant. The dozing
rate may vary from 150 ml to 250 ml per 10000 m3 of gas supply to
achieve the required smelling sulphur content to 10 to 12 ppm.
Odorants used are: Properties of Ethyl
Mercaptan
Tetrahydrothiophene or Flammable
THT Heavier than Air
Tert-Butylthiol Colourless
Ethanethiol (Ethyl Very unpleasant odour
mercaptan) Explosive Range : 2.8%
Spot leak to 18%
Components of Odorization System
1. Bulk Odorant Tank
• It is used to store odorant chemical (ethyl mercaptan is used as
odorant).
2. Bulk Odorant Filter
• It is used to filter out any dust particles and impurities from odorant
chemical before injecting in pipeline.
3. Fill valve
• The purpose of fill valve is to control the odorant flow into the
verometer.
4. Verometer
• Verometer act as an injected odorant volume verification device. It
combines with expansion tank to prevent odorant from escaping in
the atmosphere.
5. Pump
• It is a pneumatically actuated, positive displacement, reciprocating
plunger pump. It increases the pressure of odorant slightly above the
line pressure and thus discharges the odorant into the pipeline.
6. Odorant discharge manifold
• It directs the flow of odorant during regular working, maintenance,
bypass etc.
7. Gas supply filter
• It is 25 micron coalescent filter. It conditions the actuation gas and
provides clean gas to solenoid valves.
8. Expansion tank
• It acts as a pressure source and buffer for verometer. As the verometer
filled or emptied, blanket gas flows into or out of the expansion tank.
