The document discusses the manufacturing process of liquid epoxy resin through caustic coupling of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin.

The main raw materials used are bisphenol A, epichlorohydrin, sodium hydroxide, isopropanol and deionized water.

The main steps involve pre-mixing of reactants, two reactor stages, separation of resin and brine layers, evaporation to obtain pure resin, and distillation to recover epichlorohydrin from brine.

Process description
• The stoichiometric amount of Epichlorohydrin and
Bisphenol A in ratio of 2:1 is charged in the pre-mixer
tank. With mole ratio of 10:1
• After the charging of materials, agitation is done for
5 minutes and than it is charged to the Reactor-1.
• Reactor-1 is charged with the distillate containing
70% Epichlorohydrin and 20% Isopropyl alcohol at
79°C.The agitator of reactor is switched on after 1/5
th of distillate is charged. If the distillate contain less
than 20% of IPA it is charged accordingly to make the
composition of the distillate 20% IPA.
9
• Aqueous NaOH (48%)is added for and the
reaction mixture is stirred.
• The temperature of the reaction mixture
should be at 58°C, else heat the mixture.
• Cooling water jacket is started.
• Addition of Caustic is done with care, the
system is allowed to stabilize for 5 minutes.

10
• The remaining NaOH is supplied and 80%
conversion is achieved in the Reactor-1.
• Reaction mass is transferred to the Reactor-2
using centifugal pump.
• The deionized water is supplied to dilute the
NaCl formed and thereby producing brine.
• The mixture is allowed to settle and two layers
are formed. The two phases are separated by
adding an inert solvent such as IPA
11
• Top layer is rich in resin and the bottom layer
is rich in brine.
• Using the conductivity and turbidity probe
resin layer and brine layer are separated.
• The brine layer is sent to brine storage tank.
• The remaining resin rich layer and the
interphase layer are sent to reactor-2.

12
• The remaining NaOH is transferred to the second
reactor for the reaction to go completion.
• After the reaction is completed the deionized
water is supplied to the reactor and brine and
resin layers are separated. The resin layer is sent
to resin tank.
• The vacuum pump of the falling film evaporator
is started and the resin is continously supplied to
the evaporator.
13
• The condensate from the evaporator is sent to
the distillate storage tank, the residue is pure
liquid epoxy resin.
• The distillation tower is used for the recovery of
ECH from the brine.
• The brine is continuously supplied to the
distillation column for the recovery of ECH from
the brine. The top product is sent to the distillate
storage tank and the bottom product i.e. rectified
brine is sent to the wastewater treatment plant.
