Objective: Identify factors that will influence the
future of your business.
Monitor the environment- external and internal.
Collect/perceive /accumulate facts, opinions,
views, figures ,information etc..
Evaluate the acquired inputs
Disseminate the inputs and discuss the
evaluations.

•Increasing efficiency

What are budgets?

•They are useful in exercising control.
•They detail the investments planned for

This stage provides an opportunity for
organizational learning and corrective
actions.
Clear, unbiased information should be
available in timely manner for success of
this stage.

Strategic decision making falls under 3 modes as :
Entrepreneurial mode:
A single person has influence on these decisions.
Opportunities get attention and [problems do not
get due attention.
Normally growth is main objective.
Decisions are bold.
The decisions are made quick.
The decisions are based on the persons vision.

modes as :
Adaptive mode:
The decisions are reaction to environment
and not proactive.
Results in fragmented strategy rather than
coherent seamless continuum.
Results in to incremental benefits .

Planning mode:
Combines elements of proactive ness and
reactive approach to strategic decision
making. This improves preparedness to face
changes in environment better. This mode
can be said to be most desirable mode.

Practical limitations of the model:
Understanding limitations of theoretical models,will
always help in finding practical, workable solutions.
The limitations are:
Top down holistic approach may overlook
implementation difficulties. Tactical approach
works exactly in reverse order,i.e. from bottom to
top.
The model is more analytical than prescriptive or
procedural. It does not tell “how”.
It ignores political aspects, subjectivity issues,
intuition, favoritism
