objective
The objective of exergy analysis of brayton cycle is to
get maximum thermal efficiency .In
thermodynamics, the exergy (in older usage,
available work and/or availability) of a system is the
maximum useful work possible during a process that
brings the system into equilibrium with a heat
reservoir. ... After the system and surroundings reach
equilibrium, the exergy is zero

History and development
The Braytoncycle was proposed by George Braytonin
1870 for use in reciprocating engines.
Modern day gas turbines operate on Braytoncycle and
work with rotating machinery.
Gas turbines operate in open-cycle mode, but can be
modelled as closed cycle using air-standard
assumptions.
Combustion and exhaust replaced by constant
pressure heat addition and rejection

Brayton cycle (Introduction)
The Braytoncycle consists of four internally reversible
processes:1-2 Isentropic compression (in a compressor)
2-3 Constant-pressure heat addition
3-4 Isentropic expansion (in a turbine)
4-1 Constant-pressure heat rejection

The energy balance for a steady-flow process can

be expressed, on a unit–mass basis, as

The heat transfers to and from the working

Parameters Affecting Thermal
Efficiency
The thermal efficiency of an ideal Brayton
cycle depends on the pressure ratio, rp of
the gas turbine and the specific heat ratio,
k of the working fluid.
The thermal efficiency increases with both
of these parameters, which is also the
case for actual gas turbines.
A plot of thermal efficiency versus the
pressure ratio is shown , for the case of k
=1.4.

10
Braytoncycle with regeneration
Regeneration can be carried
out by using the hot air
exhausting from the turbine
to heat up the compressor
exit flow.
The thermal efficiency of
the Braytoncycle increases as
a part of the heat rejected is
re-used.
Regeneration decreases the
heat input (thus fuel)
requirements for the same
net work output. 11
Braytoncycle with regeneration
1:The extent to which a regenerator
approaches an ideal regenerator is
called the effectiveness, εand is
defined as
ε=qregen,act/ qregen,max = (h5-h2)/
(h4-h2)
2:Under the cold-air-standard
assumptions, the thermal efficiency
of an ideal Braytoncycle with
regeneration is:
3:The thermal efficiency depends
upon the temperature as well as the
pressure ratio
12
Factors Affecting Thermal
Efficiency
Thermal efficiency of Brayton cycle
with regeneration depends on:
a) ratio of the minimum to
maximum temperatures, and
b) the pressure ratio.
Regeneration is most effective at
lower pressure ratios and small
minimum-to-maximum temperature
ratios.
