COURSE OBJECTIVES
•To give an understanding on ancient planning methodologies adopted by the ancient

civilizations until the concept of New Towns.

•To understand the importance of planning at a City level.

•To understand various aspects in planning like Landuse, Infrastructure, Transportation,

Housing, and integrating them at a Town or City level.

•To understand the Process of Planning and the implementation mechanism.

HISTORY OF TOWN PLANNING

Development of town planning in the historical perspective –


Ancient town patterns in India and abroad. Impact of industrialization and
technology.

Evolution of modern town planning concepts - model towns, garden cities,


satellite towns, suburbia, green belts.

Characteristics of modern towns - classification of towns. Types of towns based on


functions. Case studies of New Towns.
