QUALIFICATION
A graduate of BS in Civil Engineering needs to take the Civil
Engineering Licensure Examination before he/she can practice the
profession. The Board of Civil Engineering facilitates the exam under
the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). It
is scheduled twice a year in the months of May and November.

REQUIREMENTS
• Civil Engineering: Requirements for Becoming a Civil Engineer
• Civil engineers work on construction, renovation, and rebuilding projects. They often work alongside architects, technologists, and other industry professionals.
Engineers may alternate time between working in an office and visiting sites. Duties may range from reviewing government regulations and city ordinances to
designing highways.
• Core Courses
• Aspiring civil engineers generally begin their college careers by enrolling in chemistry, physics, and advanced mathematics courses. Some programs may include
classes in computer-aided design (CAD) as part of the core requirements. Additionally, students may take courses in engineering statistics in order to develop
their computational skills. Pre-major courses may also cover fundamental engineering principles and concepts.
• Major Requirements
• After completing core course requirements, civil engineering students delve into advanced topics, such as thermodynamics and structural analysis. Courses may
include the completion of a design project, in which students assess structural integrity of materials. This may require the use of CAD programs to test their
designs.
• Most programs generally require students to complete laboratory courses in which they analyze substances ranging from soil to concrete. These courses help
students identify basic properties of materials, as well as potential problems from using them.
• Licensing Requirements
• According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), civil engineers who provide their services to the public must complete professional engineer (PE) state
licensing requirements (www.bls.gov). Requirements vary by state, but generally include accruing four years of work experience and completing two exams
administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (www.ncees.org).

• Through both design and project management phases, civil engineers bring large-scale construction projects to life. Bridges, dams, roads, buildings and airports all involve the work of civil engineers. Their
roles may include data analysis in the planning stage, cost estimates, materials testing and soil analysis. A civil engineer’s eduction includes courses in communications and advanced mathematics.

• Degree Requirements
• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related engineering specialty is the minimum education necessary for civil engineers. Those who wish to go into management often seek a master’s degree. The
degree program should be accredited through the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology, ABET, a non-governmental, non-profit agency. ABET-accredited degree programs are also the first step
for civil engineers who wish to gain state licensure.
• Core Courses
• Like most four-year college programs, a bachelor’s in civil engineering includes courses in arts and humanities, English and social studies. In addition, civil engineering degree programs place a strong
emphasis in science, including coursework in physics, chemistry, calculus, statistics and differential equations. Core engineering courses include mechanics, engineering statistics, fluid dynamics and
engineering systems. Since engineers must communicate their ideas and designs with others on the construction team, core requirements also include courses in general writing, technical writing and
speech.
• Advanced Studies
• Many civil engineering courses combine both a classroom and lab experience, especially in the final year of study. The lab portion may include work in the field. Some colleges offer a design project course
that requires the student to solve a problem and test the solution. Other advanced courses include electives in thermodynamics, optics and electricity, as well as studying the structural integrity of concrete
and other building materials.
• Licensure
• “Civil engineers who sell their own services publicly must be licensed in all states and the District of Columbia,” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A civil engineer must be licensed before taking
control of a project and supervising other professionals. After earning a bachelor’s degree from a ABET-accredited civil engineering school, the civil engineer must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering
Examination as the next step toward licensure. Other licensing requirements vary by state but, once passed, the new civil engineer is designated as a Civil Engineering, or CE, Intern or an Engineer-in-
Training. After satisfying a combination of experience, further examinations and other requirements which also vary by state, a person gains recognition as a CE Professional
• Health Tips: • Eat a healthy
breakfast. Studies show that
students who ate breakfast received
higher test score and showed better
concentration and memory compared
to those who skipped breakfast. They
were also more alert and creative. •
Do some exercise. By getting up and
moving around, you will improve the
circulation of blood in your body,
including your brain. • Get enough
