MR FLUID
Components/Ingredients
Magneto rheological (MR) fluids are basically non colloidal
suspensions of micro sized magnetic particles in an inert base
fluid along with some additives. Thus there are basically three
components in an MR fluid:
A. Base fluid,
B. Metal particles and
C. Stabilizing additives.
MODES OF OPERATION:
In the flow mode, the fluid is pressurized to flow between two surfaces which
are stationary. The flow rate and the pressure of the fluid may be adjusted by
varying the magnetic field.
Flow mode can be used in dampers and shock absorbers.
SHEAR MODE
•Shear mode is particularly used in clutches and brakes where rotational motion is
controlled.
•In the valve mode of the two surfaces that are in contact with the MR fluid, one
surface moves relative to the fluid. This relative motion creates a shear stress in the
fluid. The shear strength of the fluid may be varied by applying different levels of
magnetic field.

Particle Sizes !!!!!
• Application of magnetic
field, polarizes and align
magnetic particles. Particle
chain formation limits particle
movement, which in turn limits
themovement of the fluid.

LIMITATIONS
• REQUIRES HIGH VOLTAGE CURRENT WHICH IS NOT SAFE.
• High density, due to presence of iron makes them heavy.
• High quality fluids are expensive.
• Fluids are subjected to thickening after prolonged use and need replacing.
• Settling of Ferro-particles can be a problem for some application.
• Have higher magnitude of Yield Stress ,20-50 times stronger than ER fluids.
APPLICATION:
Mechanical engineering:
• MR fluid Dampers used mainly in heavy industries likely such as heavy
motor damping, heavy vehicle damping etc.,
• Seismic dampers which are positioned between building and foundation
will absorb the frequency or vibration of earth quakes.
Military and defense:
Dynamic shock absorber for all territorial vehicles, research is going on to
obtain fluid bullet resistance.
Medical field:
• MR fluid used in human prosthesis legs, it decreases force on human life.
Automobile and aerospace
Shock absorber of a vehicle suspension filled with MR fluid instead
of plain oil and the whole device surrounded with the electro magnet,
the viscosity of the fluid can be varied depending upon the
requirement.
• Clutches and brakes in vehicles.
• Used in Dampers in automobiles.
