M&M HISTORY Sylvia Xi, 4R

WHEN WERE M&M’S INVENTED?

M&M’s were first introduced commercially in March of

1941 by Forrest Mars, when he got the idea for the

candy after observing soldiers eating small chocolate

beads encased in a hard sugar shell as part of their

rations during the Spanish Civil War.

WHY WERE M&M’S INVENTED?
Mars wanted to create a chocolate that that would be

able to resist melting in high temperatures. The sugar

coated chocolates he saw during the Spanish War were

perfect. The hard shell would make it much harder for

the chocolate to melt.

WHY ARE THEY CALLED M&M’S?
M&M’s were named to represent ‘Mars and Murrie.’ This was

because of Forrest Mar’s partnership with Bruce Murrie, the

son of Hershey executive William Murrie. This new partnership

would ensure a steady supply of resources to produce M&M’s

during World War 2. In return, Murrie was given a 20

percent stake in the M&M product.

WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL
PACKAGING FOR M&M’S?
M&Ms were originally sold in cardboard tubes.

They were brown, red, orange, yellow, green or

violet. After the United States entered World War

2, the candies were exclusively sold to the military,

as part of the soldier’s rations.

AFTER WAR
• By the time the war was over and soldiers returned home,

soldiers were hooked on the new candies.

• Shortly after, the candies were made available to the

general public

• Forrest Mars bought out Murrie’s shares in the company and

took sole ownership of the M&M brand.

TIMELINE
• 1941- Mars was granted a patent for his manufacturing process and
production began in Newark, New Jersey.

•1948- Packaging hanged from a tube form to the characteristic brown pouch
we know today.

• 1950- The first "M" is imprinted on the candies in black, giving the chocolate
candies a unique trademark.

• 1954- M imprint on the candies changed to white, customers encouraged to

“Look for the M on every piece” to ensure they were getting the real thing,
and famous slogan "Melts in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hands" was born.

M&M

WHY WERE RED M&M’S DISCONTINUED?
• In the early ‘70s, a Russian study came out linking the red food dye in the red

M&M’s with amaranth (also known as Red No. 2) to cancer in humans.

• And though red M&M's didn’t actually contain amaranth, in 1976 the company

pulled out the red M&M and replaced it with the orange M&M to avoid any

confusion. So for 10 years the now-iconic red M&M was gone.

WHY WERE RED M&M’S BROUGHT BACK?
Its comeback began in 1982, when an undergrad at the University of

Tennessee named Paul Hethmon decided to create the ”Society for the

Restoration and Preservation of Red M&M’s”. The organization was a spoof on

junk-mail campaigns that were popular at the time, and asked people to send

$.99 for a lifetime membership. The joke quickly caught on, and in 1983

Hethmon received a membership application from none other than the PR

manager at M&M's Mars. Four years later (1987) the red candies were

officially back (they kept orange around, too).
