Role of IEC
The IEC’s role is to provide guidance and a leadership for
the Amnesty International movement world wide.
Its basic functions are: -
ensure the movement’s compliance with AI’s statute
ensure implementation of AI’s Integrated Strategic Plan
ensure the sound financial management of AI at the
international level
provide consent for the establishment of sections, structures
and other bodies of AI
take international decisions on behalf of AI
ensure human resources development
The IEC also appoints and directs the Secretary General.
Secretary General
Irene Khan is responsible for developing and
coordinating strategies to promote and protect human
rights. She builds and maintains high-level external
relations, representing the movement and its concerns to
governments, inter-governmental organizations, the
world’s media and the general public. She takes a leading
role in decision-making in crisis situations.
