What is Amnesty International?
 Amnesty International is a world wide movement of
people who campaign for internationally recognized
human rights to be respected and protected.
 They work to improve human rights thorough
campaigning and international solidarity.
History
It was started in 1961 by British Lawyer Peter Beneson.
The first international meeting was held in July, with
delegates from Belgium, UK, France, Germany and
US.
They decided to establish a permanent international
movement in Defense of Freedom of Opinion and
Religion.
On Human Rights Day 10th December thee first
Amnesty Candle was lit in the church of St.-Martin-
in-the-fields, London.
Mission and Vision
Amnesty International’s Vision is of a world in which
every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined
in the universal declaration of human rights and other
international human rights instruments.
Its mission is to undertake research and action
proposed on preventing and ending grave abuses of
these rights.
Management Committee in
Amnesty International
Amnesty International is an unincorporated global
movement that consist of national branches
throughout the world and an international
secretariat whose main office is in London.
The international executive committee consist of 9
people each of whom is a member of Amnesty
International.
They are elected to office biennial international
council meeting.
They serve two year terms and is eligible for
reelection for a maximum of 3 consecutive terms.

Role of IEC
The IEC’s role is to provide guidance and a leadership for
the Amnesty International movement world wide.
Its basic functions are: -
 ensure the movement’s compliance with AI’s statute
 ensure implementation of AI’s Integrated Strategic Plan
 ensure the sound financial management of AI at the
international level
 provide consent for the establishment of sections, structures
and other bodies of AI
 take international decisions on behalf of AI
 ensure human resources development
 The IEC also appoints and directs the Secretary General.
Secretary General
Irene Khan is responsible for developing and
coordinating strategies to promote and protect human
rights. She builds and maintains high-level external
relations, representing the movement and its concerns to
governments, inter-governmental organizations, the
world’s media and the general public. She takes a leading
role in decision-making in crisis situations.

The Secretary General guides the work of


worldwide sections and structures through international
meetings, while coordinating the plans of the International
Secretariat. She has overall responsibility - through senior
managers - for implementing the IEC's strategies, work
plans and budgets. She also participates in the
movement's fundraising activities.
Management
The international executive committee is responsible for
setting policy and approving operational plans.
The IEC also appoints the Secretary General, who is
responsible for the day to day operations of the
international secretariat.
The whole activity is supported by a senior management
team of six people and 442 staff.
The directors have a financial management group that
reviews financial results, monitors potential risks and
performance against budget.
The group consists of a sub-committee of the directors
supported by appropriate staff.

reviews knowledge-related policies, systems and support
services.

The directors are carrying out a project to protect the
name, logo and trademark of the Organization by
coordinating and centralizing their registration.
The whole activity is of Amnesty International taken place
by Amnesty International Ltd. and Amnesty International
Charity Ltd. and Amnesty Human Rights Foundation Ltd.
How does it work?
All activities of Amnesty International carried out by:
 They send experts to talk with victims.
 Observe trials.
 Interview local officials
 Monitor global and local media
 Inform the news media
they help stop human rights abuses by mobilising the
public to put pressure on govt. armed political groups and
inter – governmental bodies via
 Public demonstration
 Human rights education
 Community activities
 Co Operation with student groups in many other way.
Now Amnesty International
It has more than 2.2 million members, supporters and
subscribers in over 150 countries and territories in
every region of the world.
Now it has launched a CD featuring 31 world class
musicians to mobilize support called make some
noise: the campaign to save DARFUR.
