ANIMAL OIL
Animal oil is the oil from animal

Some of oil is use to cooking

Some of oil is used for medical
Used for oil lubrication
TYPES OF ANIMAL OIL
• Whale oil • Harts' horns
• Drying oil • Fish oil
• Shark liver oil • Tallow
• Neat foot oil • Blubber
• Cod liver oil • Lanolin
• Lard
WHALE OIL
 the oil obtained from the blubber of various
species of whales, particularly the three species of
Right Whale and the Bowhead Whale prior to the
modern era, as well as several other species of
baleen whale.
 a liquid wax and not true oil. It flows readily, is
clear, and varies in color from a bright honey
yellow to a dark brown, according to the condition
of the blubber from which it has been extracted.
DRYING OIL
 is oil that hardens to a tough, solid film after a
period of exposure to air.
 not harden through the evaporation of water or
other solvents, but through a chemical reaction in
which the components crosslink by the action of
oxygen.
 use has declined over the past several decades as
they are replaced by alkyd resins and then other
binders.
FISH OIL
 Oil derived from the tissues of oily fish.
 Sparked a lot of interest in the study treating
clinical depression and especially, bipolar disorder.
 Have been limited studies done on the subject, there
have been notable trials that showed significant
evidence to suggest that the omega-3 fatty acids in
fish oil acted as a mood stabilizer, or at least,
enhanced the benefit of SSRI medications
TALLOW
 A rendered form of beef or mutton fat, processed
from suet.
 It is common for commercial tallow to contain fat
derived from other animals, such as pigs or even
from plant sources. Tallow oil is used to lubricate.
NEAT FOOT OIL
 Oil is yellow oil rendered and purified from the
shin bones and feet (but not the hooves) of cattle.
 Used as a conditioning, softening and
preservative agent for leather.
 Used for a blend of pure neat foot oil and non-
animal oils, generally mineral or other petroleum-
based oils.
BLUBBER
 Under the skin of whales and other large marine
mammals
 Used as a source of oil.
 Used in the manufacture of soap, leather, and
cosmetics.
 Used in candles as wax, and in oil lamps as fuel.
COD LIVER OIL
 Nutritional supplement derived from liver of cod
fish.
 High levels of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and
DHA
 High levels of vitamin A and vitamin D
LANOLIN
 Yellow waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous
glands of wool-bearing animals.
 Used by humans comes from domestic sheep.
 Protect wool and skin against the ravages of
climate.
 Used extensively in products designed for the
protection, treatment and beautification of human
skin.
LARD
 Pig fat in both its rendered and unrendered forms.
 Used in many cuisines as a cooking fat or
shortening, or as a spread similar to butter.
 Many contemporary cooks and bakers favor it over
other fats for select uses.
 Clear, colorless oil pressed from pure lard after it has
been crystallized, or grained, at 7° C (45° F) oil
consisting chiefly of olein that is expressed from
lard and used especially as a lubricant, cutting oil or
illuminant.
Straight
Mineral Oil

4 COMPOSITE / JULY 2010

 Brake – in oil (MIL – L – 6082E & SEA J 1966)

 The most used in aviation

i. Grade 80 or SEA 40
ii. Grade 100 or SEA 50
iii. Grade 120 or SEA 60

RECIPROCATING LUBRICATION SYSTEM

Process of straight
mineral oil
 Straight mineral oil are takes from
petroleum by fractional distillation process.

 The produce in residue state use to make a

lubrication oil and straight mineral oil.

History of Straight
Mineral Oil
 Old primary lubrication oil for aircraft.
 Cannot operate at high temperature.
 It will sludge or clog the oil strainer if it
contamination with water, fuel or lead.
 It still used until now for oil consumption
stability.

Break – In Time
Used on new engine for first 10 – 15 hours.
Oil need to drain and replace with ashless
dispersant oil.
Two reason used straight mineral oil rather than
ashless dispersant oil :-
1. Ashless-dispersant oil have higher film-strength. It will
prevent the piston ring from rupturing the oil film and
therefore the necessary abrasion on the cylinder wall
will not occur.
2. It will from a glaze inside piston ring groove.

Correct grade ang high power setting of a straight
air will achieve a successful break in.
High power setting mean high combustion
pressure, due to piston ring design.
It will force the piston ring out to rupture the oil
film.

Manufacture
Nowadays, a lot of company make and sell the
straight mineral oil such as Aeroshell and Castrol.

Safety Precautions
• If the oil contact to our skin, it will plugging
of sweat glands and hair follicles.
• This can lead to skin irritation or
dermatitis.
• Wear something to cover your skin.
• Remove it by waterless hand cleaners follow
by soap, water and soft skin brush.

Warning
An empty container of it can be very
dangerous.
Do not drill, pressurize, cut, weld, braze,
grind, flame, spark; they may explode and
cause injury or death.
Do not clean by yourself because it hard to
remove and have toxic.
Need to be dispose at safe environment.
