Importance of Classroom Management
• It engages students:
Students who are engaged in lessons and the
learning material will be able to register the information
better and be able to apply their knowledge when it comes
to test taking.
• It keeps students prepared:
When teachers and students are prepared to
learn, lessons and learning will be easier to be
administered and the results will be more effective.
• It boosts confidence:
In an effective classroom, teachers are able to give more
attention to each student and structure lesson plans to meet
certain needs. All of these factors will help in boosting the
confidence of students.
How should a teacher manage the following?

• Engaged Time
• Academic learning time
• Time Needed

Discipline refers to all
the standard behaviors
in the classroom.

Principles related to Time Management:
1. Use of substantive interaction
2. Use of monitoring
3. Provisions of opportunities for skills development
necessary for the completion of the task, access to
necessary materials, & protection from possible
disruption
4. Giving of clear-cut instructions on how to do a
particular activity as well as posting directions in
writing
5. There are several ways a teacher manages his
classroom time.
Management of Instruction
Underlying principles:
1. Instructional competence lessens the effects of negative
forces from the environment
2. Recurring misbehaviour results from poor instruction.
3. The use of positive approaches/techniques in teaching,

arising from complete awareness of the underlying causes of
misbehaviour brings about better learning results.
4. Understanding by the teacher of the basic human
needs, such as food, security, belongings, &
recognition, eliminates behavior problems in the
classroom.
5. Teachers must be willing to recognize students’

needs for the instruction to be more fulfilling.
6. Teacher’s behavior facilitates students’
achievement.
7. Effective teaching enhances the teachers’

instructional competence and helps prevent
classroom management problem.
Management of Relationship
• Building learning communities in the classroom
-- cooperative learning activities
• Teaching social skills enhances opportunities for effective

learning. Students are made to understand the value of
treating each other with respect, love, and concern, &
providing opportunities for sharing each other’s talents and
ideas.

Management of Discipline
There is a discipline problem when a particular
behavior:
• interferes in the teaching act
• hinders other students’ right to learn,
• becomes destructive
• makes the classroom atmosphere psychologically or
physically unsafe
• Teacher should be competent in minimizing the
effects of misbehaviour and maximizing
instead the time spent for learning
• Student achievement is measured by how much

a teacher is able to manage the classroom
effectively
Management of Physical Environment
Relevant principles:
 Disruptive behavior is minimized given that the
environmental condition is appropriate for learning.
 Classroom guidelines are better followed by students when

teachers model appropriate classroom behavior.
 Clear communication of guidelines and their relationship to

learning promotes appropriate classroom behavior.
• Enforcement of teacher’s expectations by
teaching/inculcating the concept of responsibility
among students help them realize the consequence
of misbehaviour to learning
• Classroom guidelines match students culture of

home and community to avoid conflicting notions of
appropriate behavior.
Management of Routines
• Classroom management techniques must be
consistent with the goal of producing self-directed
individuals.
• The use of pre-planned hierarchy of skills, planned

ignoring signal interference, proximity control, and
touch control improves the teachers’ ability to
manage misbehaviour.
• The use of coping skills like non-intrusive, non-verbal
teacher behaviors gives students the opportunity for
self-control, minimizes disruption of teaching-
learning process, reduces likelihood of student
confrontation, protects students’ safety, and
maximizes the teachers’ management activities.

• Routines are the normal sequence of events like
lesson contexts, processes, schedules, and other
structures considered prerequisite for academic
performance
• Enacting processes are rule system which varies with
lesson contexts.

• Do I develop and teach procedures for everyday

routines?
• Do I observe the same set of rules and
regulations?
