What is Prestressed-Concrete(PC) ?

• Pre-stressing is the appliction of initial load on the structure

to enable the structure to counteract the stresses arising
during its service period.

• Compression is produced by the tensioning of high-

strength tendons .

• This can result in improved structural capacity and

serviceability compared to conventionally reinforced
concrete .
What is Different from RC ?
Stresses in RC Beam
Stress in Prestressed Beam
Types Of Prestressing
Pre-tensioning
 The steel wires or tendons are tensioned first
and the concrete is poured later.
Tendons are temporarily anchored and
tensioned and the prestress is transferred to the
concrete after it is hardened.
Tendon tries to shrink back to the original
length, but resisted by the bond between the
concrete thereby inducing compressive force in
it.
Pre-tensioning
Post-tensioning
 Concrete is poured first, allowed to harden and the
tendons is tensioned later.
Tendons are placed in sheathing at suitable places in the
member before casting and later after hardening of
concrete.
Prestress Losses
The difference of prestressing force between initial and final
prestressing force is called loss of prestress
 Immediate Losses 10-20%
-Anchorage
-Friction
-Elastic Shortening
Long Term Losses(Time depending loss) 15-20%
-Creep
-Shrinkage
-Relaxation
Loss due to elastic shortening
Loss due to Anchorage
Loss due to Friction

Advatages

Long span structure are possible.

Dead load get counter balanced by pre-
stressing.
It has high ability to resist the impact.
It ha high fatigue resistance.
It has high live load carring capacity.
Member are free from the tensile stresses.
Disadvantages
Required skilled builders and experienced
engineers.
High cost.
Required complicated formwork.
Its requires high strength concrete and steel.
Less fire resistent.
Application of prestressed concrete

Bridge, long span structures.

Building, post tensioned flat slab, stadium.
Tunnel, large scale piping, long pile.
Repairing and strengthening structure.
