P P. Ramlee (22 March 1929±29 May 1973) was
a Malaysian film actor, singer, director and
songwriter. Due to his contributions in the
movie and music industry, as well as in the
literary scene, he is often attributed as the icon
of Malay entertainment in both Malaysia and
Singapore.

stature rang across the continent, the most
consummate entertainer ± actor, director,
singer, composer, storyteller ± Malaysia has
seen or is ever likely to.

P P. Ramlee was born Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku
Nyak Puteh to Teuku Nyak Puteh bin Teuku
Karim and Che Mah Hussein at his grandmother's
house on March 22 ± on the festive day of Hari
Raya Aidil Fitri ± of 1929.
P Teuku Zakaria ± P. Ramlee's birth name. 'Teuku' is
a title for descendants of noble families from
Aceh of Sumatra, Indonesia. His father Teuku
Nyak Puteh was a sailor from Lho' Seumawe in
the province of Aceh, Indonesia.

P Teuku Zakaria studied at the Sekolah Melayu
Kampung Jawa, followed by Francis Light
School at nearby Perak Road. He had his
secondary education at the Penang Free School
at the end part of World War II.
P During his school days he was very active in
sports, especially sepak takraw, badminton,
and football.

P P.Ramlee is said to have taken to singing and
storytelling very naturally at a tender age. Even as
a teenager, his steady resonant voice so impressed
his neighbours that he was frequently asked to be
the muezzin and call out daily Muslim prayers at
the Kampung Jawa mosque.
P During the Japanese Occupation, P.Ramlee
learned to play the piano, violin and ukelele from
a Japanese soldier known only as Hirake-san.

P But it was the rendition of his celebrated song Azizah,
composed for his first love, which thrust him on the
threshold towards stardom.
P In 1948, B.S. Rajhans, a Singaporean director scouting
for talents, attended an agricultural show in which
Ramlee's band just so happened to be invited to
perform. Rajhans was instantly taken with the band and
Ramlee's marvellous delivery of Azizah. He asked
Ramlee and his friend Sukardi if they would be
interested in a screen test for the Shaw Brothers Malay
Film Productions.
P Thus, at the age of 19, his entertainment career began.

P Taking on the name P. Ramlee, which he first
used in 1947, he starred in his first film,
Chinta, in P. Ramlee's professional name
reflects its Indian influence, as does many of
his films. The P. in P. Ramlee stands for Puteh,
his father's name.
P After a successful career of acting, P.Ramlee
was offered a film to direct by his own and the
very first film he direct was Penarik Becha on
1955

P At the height of his career, disaster struck
when Lee Kuan Yew took Singapore out from
the Malayan Federation to become a sovereign
republic in 1965. As a patriot, P. Ramlee
insisted on returning to the Malay Peninsula.
In Malaya, he produced a further 22 films
before his death in 1973.

P Throughout his career, he acted, directed and
wrote a total of 66 movies
P He has also composed more than 250 original
songs ± including tunes that are now immortal
classics such as Bunyi Guitar, Dendang
Perantau, Jeritan Batinku and the immensely
melodious Jangan Tinggal Daku.
P His final film was Laksamana Do Re Mi on
1972 and last songs and lyrics was Ayer Mata
di Kuala Lumpur on 1973 before his death

P His movies, popularly re-run on television ever
since, have become household names and
intimately adored by a wide cross-section of
Malaysian society

P P. Ramlee married three times. His first marriage
was to Junaidah Daeng Harris, when he was only
21 years old. It ended in divorce four years later.
This was followed by his marriage to Noorizan
Mohd Noor, in February 6, 1955, also culminating
with a divorce, in 1961, when he married the
actress Salmah Ismail, better known as Saloma, in
the same year.
P He has nine children, among them three
stepchildren and four adopted children. His eldest
is Nasir P. Ramlee, born in 1953.
